Book Description

In the classic film, "Casablanca", everyone fades into the fog and that is the end of the story. But actions have consequences, and in this sequel to "Return From Casablanca", an updated version of the film's story, the reader learns what happens to the main characters, Rick Grey, Ari Levy and Anya (Sharansky) Levy after they all "fade to black" and the credits roll.
Ari Levy returns to the field and travels to the United States to track down and assassinate a terrorist, but is he ready for the mission? Ghosts of people he has killed haunt his conscience and his dreams, destroying his confidence. Reacting to the threat, Ari pushes hard against everything, and everyone, that he loves, including his wife Anya, who risked much to save him in Casablanca.
Anya turns to the only person she trusts, former CIA operative Rick Grey, now retired. Rick has settled down in the mountains of Western Virginia. but now, he has to wrestle with his own feelings for Anya. He has sacrificed much in service to his country, and wants what he missed, what Anya may be offering.

The first book in the series, Return from Casablanca, reintroduced us to the intrigue, danger and passion of the American film classic Casablanca. This excellent follow-up continues the inter-connected story of Ari, Anya and Rick. While still giving us a good dose of action, danger and modern terrorism, the author shows he cares about the motives, struggles and desires of his main characters. The author's use of detail, realistic dialogue and internal conflict, brings the characters to life. We feel Ari's fatigue, guilt and remorse--his jealousy and his desire for a new way of life. We learn Rick is more than a suave, masterful spy. And Anya, below that self-controlled, loyal surface, is struggling with her own demons. In this book, even more than the first, the author uses plot to reveal the depth of his characters. By the end of Crisis of Conscience, we want to see all three of these likeable characters land on their feet and live happily ever after. But we know this triangle will end in someone getting hurt. We will just have to wait for the third installment to see who slips and falls. If you demand more than just action and plot, if you want characters you care about and who are flesh and blood creations, not just movers of plot, you will enjoy this book. And you, too, will look forward to the concluding third volume.

More About the Author

My second novel, "Return from Casablanca" is a spy thriller set in modern day Casablanca--the classic film is one of my very favorites. I often speculated on how the film might be updated, and "Return From Casablanca" is my concept of how that might be done. It is the first of a three book series, and the second, "Crisis of Conscience", is now available in both print and Kindle editions. The third, and final chapter of the series, "Occam's Razor", is available now in both Kindle and print. I always wondered what happened to Rick, Louie, Ilsa and Victor, after they disappeared into the airport fog. Didn't everyone?

My own favorite authors are the late Tom Clancy, Preston and Childs, and James Lee Burke. I have also taken a liking to Ian Fleming's James Bond novels. 007 looks better than ever as I get older.

You will find something different from me in "A Witch In Time", a modern fantasy that I have been told is perfect reading for a cold winter afternoon.

In progress is a sequel to "Terms and Conditions"-- I am really excited to have a co-author for that work, to be called "Amendment." Check out my blog for more info as it progresses.

I live in Pittsburgh, Pa, with my "roommate" of 37 years. In 1976, while attending Penn State, I took a creative writing course on a whim, and was bit by the "author bug." In fact, the same tree in the background of my (recently taken) photo provided the shade for several of my creative writing class sessions, conducted outdoors during the Summer of 1976.

Life intruded--kids to raise, jobs to do, major appliances to purchase, etc. Now that I have retired from 35 years with a state agency, that dormant bug is quite active. (Especially when Charley, the world's noisiest house cat, leaves me in peace...) I have been blessed with family and close friends who edit, ask questions, and help me fine tune my ideas, shaping them into the stories I hope you'll enjoy.

Please let me know what you think with a review on Amazon, on Twitter @PMichaelHenning, or on Goodreads. I am happy to hear from you!

Thanks for reading!
