5.0 out of 5 stars A Must have CD for all Latinjazz lovers...Superb!!!!
Roy selected an All Star cast for this CD!! Chucho Valdez on piano, David Sanchez on sax, Miguel "Anga" on congas, Changuito on timbales Oracios"El Negro" on drums, well as you can see its a can't miss hit. Check out "Mr Bruce and Mambo for Roy".This is a must have CD for Latin Jazz Collectors. Ricky

3.0 out of 5 stars not a group
This recording has some merit, but as a whole, it is not very cohesive. It is obvious that these are capable musicians, but it's also obvious that they had not spent any real time playing together before this recording session. It is loaded with weak spots both in time, and melodic thought. Lacking direction and common musical goals, it is pretty insipid, and leaves me...

5.0 out of 5 stars impressionante!, April 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Crisol Habana (Audio CD)
A work of genius from start to finish, Habana goes from subtle and sublime to the all out conga jam without ever missing a beat.

The rhythms seem so natural that they're already a part of you, and everything on top works perfectly, whether its a 10 piece arrangement or a solo.

If you've made it to this review, you might as well hear it for yourself. Ain't no words that can do it justice.

Plus, my friend Andy said it was a Mitzvah to turn anyone on to this album. Nuff said.

5.0 out of 5 stars dope jazz, December 22, 2002
By
This review is from: Crisol Habana (Audio CD)
Ive long been a fan of latin jazz, but this album is so good that it made me bored with my collection. The complex beats, the powerful soloing, the wide range of moods in the songs and the genereal arc of the album: all make 'Habana' utterly, utterly compelling. The best jazz recording ive heard in years.
'Habana' starts off slow, but by track 7 [mountaings] you pulse will be pounding.
its dope.

3.0 out of 5 stars not a group, October 8, 2003

This recording has some merit, but as a whole, it is not very cohesive. It is obvious that these are capable musicians, but it's also obvious that they had not spent any real time playing together before this recording session. It is loaded with weak spots both in time, and melodic thought. Lacking direction and common musical goals, it is pretty insipid, and leaves me feeling I've wasted my time with it. Throughout most of the tracks, the players resort to playing loudly what they are used to playing, and very little communication takes place. Sometimes it sounds like very little listening to each other is happening, or that maybe they were having a hard time hearing each other.
Good players.....Bad setting.....mediocre music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hargrove at the top of his game, September 22, 1998

Roy Hargrove has never been better than on "Habana". He combines the Afro-Cuban jazz sound just as well as his predecessors, and the vitality flows from the music. Definitely pick this one up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Latin Jazz at its finest, December 19, 2001
This review is from: Crisol Habana (Audio CD)
In modern times, it is rare to hear a Latin Jazz album of this quality. Roy Hargrove has taken his traditional jazz trumpet and flugelhorn chops and adapted them to work with Cuban rhythms. The mix is spectacular, and the artists chosen to work on the album couldn't be better. Everything was recorded in Cuba, with a majority Cuban group, and it shows in the quality of the music. This is a must-have album for any jazz enthusiast.
