This is such a beautiful and interesting collection of music. Without hesitation, I recommend this CD.
There are so many great musicians out there that the criteria for a successful recording must encompass both technical proficiency and a strong concept. That's certainly the case in this collection from Cristina Azuma. This is a scholarly CD with a modern repertoire including Bartok and Brouwer. So many different ideas are in play. I don't have the musical vocabulary to describe this particular work in the terms it deserves. Warmth and intelligence can be heard in every single track.
The album starts with an elegantly melodic suite by Paoulo Bellinati that represents some of the best that Brazil has to offer in this genre. It ends with Dou II, which has a shimmering dreamlike quality. In between it runs the gamut without once losing focus. This CD is full of many different flavors, yet each suite matches the one that comes before or after. Similar elements from different compositions tie the CD together throughout as the music progresses, as when Agitato (by D'Angelo) buttresses Demagogie (by Agobert).
Technically the album pulls of a neat trick of being both exciting and understated at once. Both Cristina Azuma's left and right hand technique are very articulate. She has eschewed dramatic bursts for more subtle expressions. Azuma has a broad musical vocabulary, including the beautiful vibrato (in Bulgarie) that recalls current jazz as much as classical technique. Intellectually, it's a stimulating collection that one appreciates more with each listening. Emotionally, its very soulful; it seems to be a humble statement by a master guitarist, rather than a tour de force performance. Yet her technique is so impressive; very fluid with a lot of feeling.

Rigorous, confident, supple, sublime. I haven't stop listening since it arrived. Several Brazilian guitarists rank among my favorites (Barbosa-Lima, Zanon, Lopes) but this artist is an original! I'm ordering something more recent as soon as I have another package shipping. Then I'll start on the back catalog!

People interested in hearing a skillfully, soft, emotional and technical style of playing won't be disappointed with this collection of great themes, nicely played by Cristina Azuma. She researched popular and folk themes from Brazil's northeastern region, Bulgaria, France and other countries, showing that they have a kind of continuity and relationship between them. Highly recommended. I fell in love with her work.
