Editorial Reviews

Down by Law

Described by director Jim Jarmusch as a "neo-beat-noir-comedy," Down by Law is part nightmare and part fairy tale. When fate lands three hapless men--an unemployed disc jockey (Tom Waits), a small-time pimp (John Lurie), and a strong-willed Italian tourist (Roberto Benigni)--in a Louisiana prison, their singular adventure begins.

Night on Earth

Five cities. Five taxicabs. A multitude of strangers in the night. Jim Jarmusch assembled an extraordinary international cast of actors (including Gena Rowlands, Winona Ryder, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Beatrice Dalle, and Roberto Benigni) for this hilarious quintet of tales of urban displacement and existential angst, spanning time zones, continents, and languages.

Stranger than Paradise

Jim Jarmusch's one-of-a-kind minimalist masterpiece (about the aimless adventures of a rootless Hungarian émigré, his pal, and his visiting sixteen-year-old cousin) forever transformed the landscape of American independent cinema. Also included in this special-edition release is Jarmusch's legendary debut feature, Permanent Vacation, a time capsule of late-seventies Manhattan, on DVD for the first time in the United States.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jarmusch is Brilliant September 25, 2008
Having just worked with Jim on his upcoming "The Limits of Control", I have witnessed first hand the extent of his genius. Jim is a passionate and intuitive storyteller who takes untraditional routes to explore his characters. Jim's early films are his best. The performances he coaxes from his cast are unparalleled. These are my favorite films. The Criterion editions are worth every penny, with their pristine transfers and special features.
