Book Description

January 1999 0847690113 978-0847690114
Essays by some of the world's leading educators provide a revolutionary portrait of new ideas and developments in education that can influence the possibility of social and political change.

The authors take into account such diverse terrain as feminism, ecology, media, and individual liberty in their pursuit of new ideas that can inform the fundamental practice of education and promote a more humane civil society. The book consolidates recent thinking just as it reflects on emerging new lines of critical theory.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This book brings together a diverse range of papers, all of which are worthy in their own right. (Pattison, Gary Network--Newsletter Of The British Sociological Assn., No.74 )

A useful collection of articles by some of the most important representatives of 'Critical Pedagogy' . . . a valuable source that I would recommend to others to read. (Allman, Paula Studies In The Education Of Adults )

Could well become a classic piece. (Ralph T. Mason Journal Of Educational Thought )

A clear analysis of the present informational society in which the ability to select and acquire new information is crucial, and the critical perspective needed to create educational proposals that will help move society toward values of equality and solidarity. (MSG Harvard Educational Review )

2.0 out of 5 stars A collection of 1993-94 essays without thematic unity., November 17, 1999
This is a collection of interesting, but largely unrelated, papers from a conference in Barcelona in 1994, which do not present a coherent analysis, and only marginally treat education in relationship to information technology. The title is misleading, and Castells is not the editor, but simply one of the contributors, writing on a topic alien to education. The reader from Atlanta writing a review on this site is absolutely right. Do not expect a book. Some of the articles, particularly the one by Freire, could be of your interest.

1.0 out of 5 stars nb! translation of 1994 Spanish original, August 26, 1999
By A Customer
This is not really a "1999" book, in case anyone is looking for the latest from Castells--rather it offers a translation of a collection of essays published in Spanish five years ago (and written a year or two before that, judging from the references). One would think this information should be part of the bibliographic description of the title.
