From the Back Cover

Officer Brinna Caruso has built a reputation at the precinct as the cop to call when a child goes missing. For Brinna, it’s personal because she was once one of them. Brinna and her K-9 search and rescue dog, Hero, will stop at nothing to find a missing child, no matter the stakes.

Detective Jack O’Reilly isn’t ready to return to his homicide duties after losing his wife to a drunk driver. He’s on the downside of his career, and bent on revenge, when he’s assigned as Brinna’s partner. While on patrol, Jack struggles between his quest for personal justice and his responsibility to those around him, especially his partner.

Skeptical of Jack’s motives, Brinna isn’t sure she can rely on her new partner, whose reckless abandon endangers those around him. But when a man surfaces with an MO similar to the criminal who abducted Brinna twenty years earlier, Brinna and Jack must cast aside previous judgments and combine efforts to catch the kidnapper and finally allow Brinna the peace stolen from her as a child.

More About the Author

A retired Long Beach California police officer of 22 years (16 in uniform and 6 as a non-career officer), Janice Cantore worked a variety of assignments, patrol, administration, juvenile investigations and training. During the course of her career in uniform Janice found that faith was indispensable to every aspect of the job and published articles on faith at work, one for a quarterly newspaper called "Cop and Christ", and another for the monthly magazine "Today's Christian Woman".

With retirement Janice began to write longer pieces and several novels were born. Janice is excited and honored to now be a part of the Tyndale Publishing House family. Accused, the first installment in her new suspense offering, The Pacific Coast Justice Series, was released February 1, 2012 and kicked off a brand new chapter in her writing career. In addition to suspense and action, her books feature strong female leads. Janice writes suspense novels designed to keep you engrossed and leave you inspired.

Critical Pursuit is a fantastic book! Of course, I'm a fan of suspense novels and have enjoyed Janice Cantore's previous books, but this one was my favorite so far! The book is a bit grittier than her previous books (but nothing over the top). I was totally caught up in the police drama, and all of the personal drama just added to my enjoyment of the book.

Cantore found the perfect balance for Brinna's character. She was so anti-God and obsessed with her work (which sometimes makes a character easy to dislike). However, she was so personable that I found myself rooting for her early on. Jack was similar. I felt his raw emotions and couldn't help but want the best for him ... even if he was a little "off" at times.

If you enjoy police dramas, I think you'll love Critical Pursuit! [4.5 stars]

* Note: This book was previously published as The Kevlar Heart.

I received a free copy of this book from Tyndale House in exchange for my fair and honest review.

I received this book in the mail on Monday. By Tuesday mid-afternoon I was done. I could not put it down.

As a child, Brinna is abducted and left for dead. As an adult, she helps to find abducted. After a shooting on the job, she is transferred to patrol and partnered with Jack- a burned out homicide cop who lost his wife. As they go through shifts and life changing events together in their short two week rotation, they are thrown into a search that turns personal for Brinna. Will Brinna and Jack find God in their search to bring a killer to justice?

This book was really, really good. Like I said I finished it in 24 hours. The author keep you pulled into the story from the first chapter and keeps you guessing throughout the book. With an underlining search for God and also an underlining yearning for the characters to "get with it", the story just keeps going. I had not heard of Janice Cantore before this book but she is now on my author radar. Great for teenagers on up, men and women.

The writing was good and the characters were okay. The plot was pretty good. However, this should never have been in the romance section as there was no romance whatsoever, and it should have said "Christian fiction" somewhere in the description. I am a Christian but I don't want to read a book where God is discussed in every conversation. It is annoying and it takes away from the mystery. And it does a real disservice to the readers if that label isn't included in the description. If I had paid for this book, I would have demanded my money back on principle because of the failure to include "Christian fiction" in the description.

Critical Pursuit by Janice Cantore is an inspiring, emotional story that will keep the reader in anticipation of what is to come. Officer Brinna Caruso, who was once abducted, focuses her career on rescuing abducted children. Brinna and her dog Hero have a special relationship to work together to track down the criminals. While Brinna denies God’s existence, her new partner Jack O’Reilly is recovering from the tragic death of his wife. Together, through finding a set of abducted twins, Brinna and Jack work to not only find the children, but also labor to find peace with God.
Tyndale House provided a complimentary copy of Critical Pursuit for review purposes. This novel is not the typical book that I normally read; however, I enjoyed accompanying Brinna on her journey to not only rescue children, but also find the peace from God she needed to fully enjoy her life. Janice Cantore did a wonderful job of compelling her audience to stay engrossed in the story. By the end the reader feels triumphant. Janice also inspires those whose relationship with God is stagnant and whose relationship is questioning His will to take a step back and focus on God’s everlasting love and grace.

Critical Pursuit is the first book I've read by Janice Cantore and, when I first learned about it, I didn't know it was previously published by Oaktara in 2007 as The Kevlar Heart. I really liked this book and it reminded me a little bit of some of Lynette Eason's books. I thought the story was interesting throughout and, while it wasn't a secret to the reader who the villain was, there were still some suspenseful moments.

I liked the characters and seeing them grow as the story progressed. I'm definitely interested in reading the next book with Officer Brinna Caruso, Visible Threat, as Critical Pursuit ended with me wondering what was going to happen next in Brinna's and Jack's life.

Overall, Critical Pursuit was a really good suspense read. There wasn't a lot of romance, but there are hints of it developing. I recommend it to fans of this genre.
