5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for all..., December 21, 2004
This review is from: Critter Costuming: Making Mascots and Fabricating Fursuits (Spiral-bound)
This is an excellent book for any one interested in building a fursuit or any kind of costume. Lots of very useful information with picture tutorial guides and tips on storage and care. AND it has tips on performance. Cause what good is a costume or character of any kind if you don't know how to use it. I very good book. I recomend it to any one who is interested in building a fursuit or mascot costume.

5.0 out of 5 stars In doubt? Get it!, March 9, 2005

This review is from: Critter Costuming: Making Mascots and Fabricating Fursuits (Spiral-bound)
I just received Critter Costuming, and I must say that I LOVE it. It is a must have for anyone who is interested in making any type of mascot style costume. It covers everything from design and planning to tools and materials you would need, head and body construction to traveling and performing. It also has a helpful list places to order materials that are mentioned in the book. Even interviews with professional cosume makers, performers, and material specialists are included.

It has advice on almost every question you could think of asking about making this style costumes and some things you wouldn't think about until you were stuck (such as how to sew in a zipper correctly).

I must admit that I was hesitant to order the book at first because, one, I thought it cost a little more than I was willing to spend, and two, because it was spiral bound... but let me just say that the price is definitely worth it, and the spiral does not make it any lower quality.. and in fact, it's much easier to lay flat and reference when you are working than a hard- or paperback book.

It doesn't matter if you are just starting your first suit, you have already made a few but would still like a good reference guide, or you have never made one before but are interested, I would definitely recommend getting this book. It is one of the best investments I've made this year.

While there are some advanced techniques that got less treatment than I would have liked to see (like airbrushing fur for example) there is a lot of good information in this book, and I would reccommend it. I've been asked to make a furry mascot and without this book I would have wasted a lot of time probably, just trying to figure things out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Face it, its the only decent book on the subject., May 9, 2007
This review is from: Critter Costuming: Making Mascots and Fabricating Fursuits (Spiral-bound)
Lots and lots of good data, and plenty of nice pics. Covers about anything you could want it to. This isn't just a book you flip through and put on the shelf, this is one you will actually read, and refer back to, and takes the unknowns out of making your own fursuit.

4.0 out of 5 stars Definitively worth a look if you're doing your on Mascot/Fursuit, October 12, 2007
This review is from: Critter Costuming: Making Mascots and Fabricating Fursuits (Spiral-bound)
The book covers the subject much more in detail then I would have expected, however the general guide on the actual work is too limited on a few techniques, even though it is understandable why. I would also have liked more tips on how to do something, and how not.

There are nice portraits of some known or good Fursuit bilders which adds well to the overall impression.
However this book will still require you to do much additional research on how to do what you want (either by searching the internet or contacting people for tips) and where to get the manterials needed, especially if you do not live in the USA (some sources are covered, but the concentrated on the US).

I have not red the book fully, though, as you might also use it as a compendium to look into when you want to know something specific.

Many who got to know of or bought this book will know the Furry Fandom or be part of it - under this context I must say that the book is held rather general in terms of the target audience, which can be considered positive - but I would have liked a more Furry focus and touch to it.

Still, it has helped me on my plan to build a Fursuit and I would recommend it, especially as there are no other sources (in book form) like this that I know of.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved the book., March 10, 2007
This review is from: Critter Costuming: Making Mascots and Fabricating Fursuits (Spiral-bound)
I thought this was very informative. I was a little skeptical to buy it with the other reviews, but took the chance and I love it! I also went on the websites in the book and they offer advice in addition to the info in the book. And the author is there to answer any questions you may have (I had a couple), so this is a must buy for people who are just getting into the fursuiting community, like me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent costumers' resource!, March 8, 2007
This review is from: Critter Costuming: Making Mascots and Fabricating Fursuits (Spiral-bound)
While not for your average fashion project, this book is a treasure trove of information for anyone interested in making animal and creature costumes.

[..]

Both the website and book have extensive photos of the different processes involved in making these kinds of costumes, and very detailed information about materials, including safety data about glues and adhesives that can be applied to many other projects as well.

Although a bit pricey the book is worth absolutely EVERY cent!!

This review is from: Critter Costuming: Making Mascots and Fabricating Fursuits (Spiral-bound)
I only heard good things about this book, and being a first-time fursuit maker, I went ahead and ordered it, because I really didn't know where to start. The book is a wealth of information. It covers myriad possibilities and alternatives for materials, construction techniques and more.
If my first fur-suit doesn't work out 100%, it sure won't be the fault of this book.
