Fits my skimmer perfect.

Next, after assembling and installing the replacement, I noticed that the Spiral ladder did not reach the water by a good 2 - 3 inches.

I do a lot of shopping at Amazon, and have been for many years now. This is the 1st product that has motivated me to write a review. It is that good.

This is a sturdy product that couldn't be easier to use. There is no assembly required, it goes from out of the box, right into the ground. We have had this product installed for roughly 1 week now, and I could not be happier with the result.

A little background: We have a large in-ground pool that is responsible for drowning a variety of creatures (frogs, toads, mice, chipmunks, moles, even a small skunk!) We have managed to find ways to keep the mammals (mostly) safe, but the poor amphibians just don't seem to "get it". Every morning there were typically 4-6 dead frogs either in the filter basket or floating in the pool. The morning after a rainstorm looked like we were trying to make dead frog/toad soup! Yuck.

I found this product in a catalog, did some further research on the company's site (just the product name & dot com) and decided to give it a try (here on Amazon of course because I sprung for Prime and now hate paying shipping). It really is as straight forward as it seems. You replace your current skimmer cover with this one, and when frogs fall into the pool, they are able to crawl up the ramp and onto the rest of their little froggie day. No more expensive frog life guards required. My only concern is that it leaves out my fine fat toads. But they can easily wait on the ramp for rescue. Obviously for this to be an effective cover the hole cannot accommodate the grapefruit sized hoppers. Personally I suspect the big ones are just too lazy to get out on their own anyway.

Technical details: The actual hole size that must be breached by the escaping frog is 2" wide and 1 1/4" tall.

I have 2 filters on the pool. Both collect an ample amount of critters over the course of the summer.

I bought the critter skimmer as a test for one filter.

First issue was that the item shipped with the wrong size cover. I reported the issue to Amazon and they immediately sent me a new skimmer at no cost.

Next, after assembling and installing the replacement, I noticed that the Spiral ladder did not reach the water by a good 2 - 3 inches. If critters can't reach the ladder they don't exit. To reconcile the issue, I cut a plastic strip out of an old bucket and screwed it onto the end of the ladder. Voila. Ladder now touches the water. After several weeks, happy to report no dead froggies in the filter.

Will now place order for second one. Though I would strongly recommend to the seller that they create option of longer ladder.

We pool owners all know the sad and guilty feeling that comes when you open your skimmer and find a dead frog or mouse. If you're like me, when you find a live frog or snake you rush to find something to get it out with so you don't have to touch it. This very clever device will change all that. It's possible there could still be a dead animal in the skimmer once in a while that died elsewhere in the pool and then got pulled into the skimmer afterward. But, I suspect most of them get pulled into the skimmer when they're weak, but not dead. With the critter skimmer, they can then save themselves by going up the ramp of the Critter Skimmer to freedom and safety.
It is just as easy to use as the regular skimmer lid that came with your pool. The little ramp doesn't make it any harder to open and close.
I'm delighted I found it.

I am happy to say that these work really well. We live in a rural area, not far from a stream; we would find 5 - 10 dead or exhausted frogs in each filter basket, every morning. Since we installed the Critter Skimmer last week, we have found only 2 frogs.

Great product, works as advertised, made in the USA! Not inexpensive, but highly recommended.

My husband and I had been very distressed by the number of frogs that had been dying in our pool skimmer system. Once they were trapped, they had no way to escape. When I read about this product, I couldn't believe it would work but it does. It's so simple - they climb the spiral and get out. Sometimes, they don't make it all the way out but that's okay. They just sit on the ladder spiral until we rescue them when we check the skimmer. Changing out the regular skimmer cover for this spiral ladder has had no impact on the pool's operation. The tan cover blends in nicely with the pool's deck. What a great idea. It cost so little to save so many lives. I could not recommend this product more highly!

I know it may be a small thing to many but this product saves frogs daily, it is easy to install and since putting in place I have had no dead frogs trapped in the pool. I was having to go out every morning and everyday after work to net the frogs out before they die, now they are able to get themselves out.

I had an in-ground pool installed this summer and love animals and wildlife. We have tons of frogs that live around our pool and even go for a dip in the pool at night, yet I have NEVER found one in the skimmer so the critter skimmer must be working. I honestly didn't believe this device would work so well. I am totally satisfied with my purchase and would highly recommend this product.
I have a Hayward (10 inch square) skimmer. The critter skimmer fit perfectly.
