BackCountry Navigator is mobile mapping software for outdoor recreation. Explore your world beyond the limits of roads and cell coverage. Plan and navigate using offline topo maps and aerial photography.

Topo maps, or topographic maps, show terrain and contours. They are great for exploring outdoor wilderness areas.

When enjoying outdoor recreation, you often don’t want to worry about internet access and cell coverage. You can safely store maps on your storage card and use them when you need them.

The maps are downloaded by the app from a variety of public domain map sources.

BackCountry Navigator is useful for a variety of outdoor activities including hiking, geocaching, hunting, fishing, camping, and exploring a variety of trails.

If your Android device is equipped with a GPS, you can use this software as a full outdoor navigation device. Mark waypoints and tracks, and find ones you have previously defined or imported.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great! April 14, 2011
This program is quite powerful as a companion to a full featured gps or as a standalone. Comes in handy when in the woods for seach and rescue, hunting or for fun. Accurate and reliable even when out of cell range. Thanks!

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost there! WAIT! It IS there!! October 22, 2012

Second update for February, 2013: You CAN change line size. It is not on the "track" menu, but in the general "settings" under "track." VERY handy to have wider lines!

This program is FAR more useful to me than National Geographic Topo! was on my much more powerful MacBook Pro. There is some WONDERFUL programming going on here, and even more attention to details that make a difference to map users!

Edited for update installed February, 2013!

BackCountry Navigator PRO now DOES havea way of drawing a route! In fact, with the SPEN on the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, this is the BEST route entry I've used, whether on PC or tablet! It takes a little experimentation. Search on "Measure and Create Routes." The entry method has a VERY effective "undo." For dozens of miles of routes, use road navigation software. For off-road routes, THIS is now my favorite tool. IGNORE DOWNSIDE #1 BELOW!

Also, version 4.8.5 has a new user interface that makes some of the file handling and action options more clear. Track lines are MUCH easier to see, although you still cannot change the line size or type. With the new line size scaling, manual line size setting is no long a "down side." IGNORE DOWNSIDE #2 BELOW!

No problem changing this from four to FIVE stars! With there were SIX!

ORIGINAL REVIEW BELOW:

This app does a very credible job of doing everything my aging National Geographic Topo set does. The big surprise it that it does it responsively on a Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet instead of a 17" Macbook Pro.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect app! May 22, 2011

What a wonderful application! I was looking into buying a standalone GPS, and I am glad that I waited! This is a simple, yet powerful GPS tool, and will do nearly anything that a $200+ unit will do. Best $10 I've ever spent!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great alternative to a regular GPS! January 15, 2012
Verified Purchase
This is a wonderful product, but do plan to read the User Guide and play around with it to learn how this nify app works. I didn't think I'd like it at first, and still find it too small to be really useful in my cell phone (maybe my eyes are not great). However, I downloaded it to my 7" Tablet and love it! Gives good detail in the backcountry and is easy to use, once you have spent some time with it. Does everything that my regular GPS does, but gives a much larger and clearer view of the landscape. If you enjoy being out in the backcountry and don't want to purchase a GPS, this will work really well. I tend to use it mostly for navigating backcountry roads, but it also works well on hiking trails. It would be good for horseback riders too.

I'm very involved in K9 wilderness Search & Rescue and having such an excellent topo and aerial mapping application right on my phone is awesome! Backcountry Navigator incorporates several different map types and offers high quality topo and aerial maps, using both lat/lon and UTM grid references which is a very important feature for me. The great maps, in addition to GPS tracking and waypointing, make this a very valuable tool for my SAR toolbag.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best GPS Color Movng Map Topo Program! June 14, 2011
Verified Purchase
I have been using BCN on my Axim/Windows 5.0 and HTC HD2 /Windows Mobile 6.5.3 for years now and it has been extremely good. I have used it extensively for hiking and backpacking. Now I am running Android 2.3.3 on my HD2, with the new version of BCN and I am just as happy. I have tried several of the other GPS softwares out there but none is as good as BCN. The developer/programmer is the most responsive of any I have ever seen. He is constantly updating the software and adding new features, driven by user feedback. This is the model by which all other software developers should compare themselves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great App September 8, 2011
By Tacul
I lost my Garmin GPS.

As an interim measure, I downloaded Backcountry Navigator for my Android. After using this app for a while, I don't think I am going to replace my Garmin with another GPS.

The Backcountry Navigator app does pretty much everything I need it to do. I can download maps of places I will be going so that they are available when I'm not in cell phone range. I can navigate using detailed topo maps, create waypoints, etc. I can keep track of different waypoint sets in different tracks. I can locate geocaches.

I can do all this on my cell phone, which is something I will be bringing with me anyway, so it saves on space and weight. I can't really see any reason to get a gps. This app is really terrific.

Topo app compatible with Kindle Fire HD?
CO climber, I have the same question, and I posed it to the software developer this afternoon.
