Product Description

In 1977 a local ski patrolman from Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in Wyoming, came up with an idea for an eyewear retainer that would grip his shades through all kinds of alpine adventures. Using an old wetsuit, some sharp scissors, and good old American ingenuity, he made the first pair of eyewear retainers. The ingenious device was based on the design of a Chinese finger trap and it quickly became a hit with all of the patrollers! Demand picked up quickly for the patrolman’s invention which was nameless at first. Back in the seventies, the Jackson Hole ski patrol used the nickname “croakies” when they couldn’t think of a word (think “thingamajig”), but it finally stuck on the first neoprene eyewear retainer ever invented. Croakies headquarters are still in Jackson Hole, Wyoming with our production in Bozeman, Montana. Our inspiration remains the same - to create eyewear retainers and accessories that provide comfort, style, durability, and functionality to active people of all ages. With the addition of men's and women's belts into Croakies accessory line-up, Croakies now offers something for everyone. Croakies products are sold by retailers throughout the United States and in over 30 countries around the world. They’ve even been used OUT of this world – Croakies became standard issue on the Space Shuttle in 1990.

I've had problems over the years with dropping my sunglasses out of my shirt pocket in everyday use, or having wind or water blow them off my face or head to their watery grave while sailing. So, for years I've used some kind of lanyard. I've tried various sorts and quite truthfully just tolerated them because I needed the device to protect my sunglasses investment.

My complaints with lanyards are many - they tangle, they snag on my shirt collar, they are too tight or too loose, they at various times look cool or gaudy. The last lanyard I had was for me barely tolerable - it was light weight, black, and didn't tangle much, but it did frequently go down my neck in the back and snag when I was driving. Without many regrets, the gripper thingies that hold it to the temples of the glasses gave out and I was suddenly in the market for a new one.

Surfing about here on Amazon as well as on company websites, I came across these Arc Retainers from Croakies. After using them for several weeks, I'll never use another lanyard. All the things I hate about lanyards these things have fixed. The coated wire that makes up the retainer itself is smooth and light. It doesn't snag, pinch, or even lay on my neck. When my sunglasses are on - it just sticks out back around my head. If I rub or bump against something (put on or take off a shirt or jacket, for example), it doesn't snag or grab. If I let the sunglasses hang around my neck, the retainer stays on securely and the wire is so smooth the sunglasses move easily with my body. If I decide to put my sunglasses up on top of my head, the wire adjusts to stay off my neck. If my sunglasses are in my pocket, the wire folds flat and doesn't tangle or snag other things in my pocket. Fabulous.

The retainer is very comfortable to wear. You don't even notice it. It comes with two pairs of small and large rubber attachment pieces that slide onto the ends of your glasses. One is for thick frames one is for narrow. I have a pair of Maui Jim HO'OKIPA sunglasses which have medium width frames. I started with the smaller attachments and those lasted for about a month before the ends split and stopped staying on. I then switched to the larger attachments, after about two weeks those are starting to split as well.

Working as a surveyor, I often needed to remove my sunglasses. All the ones I tried before would be a constant irritant because of the rope/string resting on the back of my neck. The small cable on these Croakies is able to retain its own weight, and allows you to almost forget you're wearing them. Excellent product idea.

The retainer does come with a second set of connectors that is intended for larger frame ends. Luckily they work on my glassed too otherwise I would have been really upset. The one of the original rubber connectors just gave way about a month after I got it.
It could have been disastrous if my glassed fell on concrete or something hard, but it happened while on the couch.

Great idea, but questionable quality. The cord around the back of the neck works exactly as described. It is light weight, visually unobtrusive, and can be adjusted so that it does not rest on the neck. My problem was with the end pieces that attach to the glasses. The item I received had two sets of rubber end caps--one for wide ear pieces and one for smaller ones. One of the large end-pieces was already split in the original package, so I used the smaller ones. Half way through my trip, one of the smaller end pieces also split rendering the product useless for the rest of the journey. Since the absence of the retainer made little if any difference on the remainder of my journey, I now question the necessity of the product altogether.

I used to have the regular Croakies, both the slim and wide versions. I started to not like the way the fabric felt on my neck and looked so clunky. Over time, I lost two pairs of sunglasses, because I could not stand the Croakies any longer. These, however, are the perfect solution. They have held up well so far with no signs of wear and tear over about 4 months. If you are looking for an alternative to your current eye-wear retainers, these are the way to go. The black cable is very thin, yet durable, and does not steal attention from your other apparel. In fact, it is subtly stylish if you really are concerned about that. I see it as the everyday (rugged) tuxedo of eye-wear retainers. If you wear a collared shirt (or a t shirt even), you can comfortably turn your glasses backwards when indoors and tuck the cable into your outer shirt with it being barely noticeable at most. My sunglasses are large framed and these still accommodate them. The trick is that these are made to go on tight so they stay on; however they come off easily with deliberate force. In other words, don't be afraid to squeeze your sunglasses in as far as you think they need to go. Just use common sense and don't apply to much pressure. I would have to say this is the best eye-wear retainer I've ever had!

These were great and just what I was looking for! I highly recommend this company. They are smaller than the cord style and my husband loves them.
