About the Author

IRINA BAN is a PR agent and consultant specializing in Croatia’s hidden destinations, gastronomy, and wines. She has organized trips for journalists and photographers from such diverse publications as GEO, National Geographic, National Geographic Adventurer, Elle, Le Figaro Magazine, The Financial Times, The Guardian, CondeNast Traveller, The Independent, World Atlas of Wines, and Scotland on Sunday. She has contributed to Time Out Visitor’s Guide to Croatia, Alistair Sawday’s Special Places to Stay in Croatia, and the French travel guides Petit Futé and Hébergement Insolite. Beside travel and tourism, she is interested in cross-cultural projects. In 2004, together with the Croatian Embassy in Brussels, she helped to organize the photographic exhibition “Croatian Lighthouses” in the Berlaymont building, the first such event to be held by the European Executive. She lives and works in Zagreb.

'Culture Smart' Series Review:

First, I am a culture junkie and am a big fan of the 'Culture Smart' series with seven guides thus far in my growing collection. * Germany, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Cuba, Croatia, Brazil and Morocco * This series offers a compact look into the cultures of the world: their customs, attitudes and behaviors, etc. These books provide perhaps as close of understanding to many of them as a reader will have. It also does not hurt that I take in fun/unusual facts like a sponge. I highly recommend this series before traveling to another country or just to further your knowledge of other cultures.

Pretty thin -- or better yet, shallow as all heck. Helpful however if you've never been outside of Boise,Idaho.(imho). The author either has rather limited cultural knowledge relating to Croatia or has made the choice (PC?) to steer clear of topics and details that would appeal to the more inquisitively inclined harboring tastes for truly exploitable 'anthro-angles'. Could've done quite well w/o this purchase.
