Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Is the “dude” in the title intended to actually fashion these 30 crochet items—or simply model or use them? Either way, first-time author Emborsky conjures up non-lace-looking apparel and accessories to win hearts and wallets and men—and those who love them. Not one for much in the way of prefatory notes, Emborsky covers the basics—fibers, hooks, and sizing—then launches into his two-dozen-plus crochet-ables, all with great color photographs, good directions (and charts, when needed), and notes on the requisite materials and skill level. Among the more unusual selections are a sock for MP3 players, covers for golf clubs, cotton cloths to buff cars to a high sheen, and a power tie reminiscent of Rooster neckwear. The rest are handmade in patterns that won’t embarrass even the ultimate preppy and colors that can gently fade into the background. Look for general how-to’s and charts at the end. --Barbara Jacobs

Product Description

No fuss, no frills—these patterns are MANLY! Welcome the very first book dedicated to crochet projects just for guys, written by celebrity blogger Drew Emborsky—popularly known as “The Crochet Dude.” Whether the woman in his life makes him a gift or a man actually crochets himself, these are clothes and accessories he’ll actually enjoy wearing. (It’s true!)
A helpful overview provides information on sizing, style, and fiber options. Then grab your hook and dive on into any one of 26 projects, done in a muted, masculine color palate with touches of bold color to liven things up. Classic fingerless gloves will suit every guy from lumberjack to skateboarder. The thick Zip It Cabled Vest will keep him warm without feeling encumbered. Or crochet a variation of the traditional Aran fishermen’s sweater or a tailored cotton workout pullover in vibrant green and black. From a Jock Block Hat & Scarf to golf club covers, this attractively photographed collection is packed with ideas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally! Something for us boys!, October 29, 2008
By Carl M Johengen (Bath, NY USA) - See all my reviews
I'm just delighted by this book and can't wait to crochet nearly everything in it. I've already started my first EVER sweater (Weekend Turtleneck) and am feeling brave and cautiously optimistic. The book is well written, the projects are well photographed, and the writing is clear and easy to read. Thank you so much Drew - you are a true inspiration!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Dude Rocks, October 17, 2008
Well written and he put in a lot of visual aids
as well as the pattern.
I'm eying more than one of the sweaters that
I would like to make for myself.
The weekend Turtleneck just looks so comfortable
and sounds like it would be a quick project.
Don't let the price fool you. It looks like
it should cost twice as much.
Finally, a book of patterns just for men and not a
book with just one pattern for a man.
These are designed for guys to wear by a guy.
Not something your wife picked out for you.
Pick up a copy and I know that you won't be
disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally!! Perfect project for the guys in your life!, October 16, 2008
I got this book in the mail yesterday and much to my surprise, there are even a couple things in there I want to make for myself.
Not only does this book have some great classic sweaters in it that have always been and always will be in style but it also has some sporty and preppy looks that are great for right now.
I also have to say, the writings in this book are what really made me 'fuzzy' inside. Knowledgable, clear, and funny. Don't forget the touching dedication to his mother.
All around, a great book that I would highly recommend to anyone. I'm going to make the hoodie for myself. Can't wait to start!
