Filet crochet, an airy, lacelike stitchery, is a much more European technique than traditional crochet. Though the emphasis in King's book is definitely on Old World forms and projects, she does include patterns for folks on this side of the Atlantic. For beginners, the opening how-tos are fairly complete; stitches are illustrated with line drawings, and finishing instructions are explained in blurbs. The 55 projects are segregated by room functions; each indicates level of difficulty, along with a list of materials, directions, and graphs (when necessary). Among the more ambitious and fanciful are a lampshade, a picture frame, a playing-card holder, and a cake frill. Barbara Jacobs

This book has a wide variety of patterns. There are patterns for all levels of crocheters. Items aren't of the usual run of the mill either. Great gift ideas! Instructions are clearly written. This book is one all crocheters should have in their collection.
