Editorial Reviews

Review

Accomplished seamstress Bev Dillon is the host and instructor for her third craft tape (the first two were Knitting From Start to Finish*ing with Bev Dillon, reviewed in our March 1989 issue, and Tatted Lace From Start to Finish*ing with Bev Dillon, reviewed in our June 1990 issue). In this program, Dillon explains what items will be necessary to complete crocheting projects, guides viewers through the terminology, and demonstrates various crochet stitches, and then shows viewers how to make a simple scarf, shawl, ripple afghan, crocheted bears, granny squares, string bag, puff stitch hat, cape, bead trimmed bag, hot pad, lace scarf, and more, while also teaching applicable techniques. The accompanying booklet has patterns for all of the projects on the tape. A good program with more that enough projects to keep viewers crocheting for months. Recommended. -- Video Librarian, May-June 1993

This video is above five stars! Mrs. Dillon is almost like having your grandmother teach you.How they film it is of great help because it is as if you are looking down at your own hands.I never thought that I could do this and with in the first minutes of the video I was CROCHETING ! Very clear and calm instrutions, better then any book. If my best friend wanted to learn to crochet I would buy her this video.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Tutorial!, February 20, 2000

This video was excellent! Finally, a chance to actually see how the stitches are made properly. I was particularly impressed with the section on granny squares, changing yarn colors, and the different edgings to enhance all crocheted items. This is a must for beginners to advanced if crocheting is your passion.

I tried to teach myself crochet from the books I found in crafts stores, but sooner or later someone has to show you how to turn corners, weave in ends, and read patterns. If you don't have access to someone who is knowledgable and very experienced in crochet, I whole-heartedly recommend this video. You can see close-ups of the stitches and Bev Dillon's hands as if you're looking down at your own hands. Another plus for beginners...as she demonstrates the stitches, she shows you slowly and talks you through it, and during some segments of the video, you can watch her crochet at full-speed and see how she develops rhythm. This is definitely lacking in the how-to books.

This video includes projects and a booklet that contains all the items she crochets in the video, including a granny square which I find challenging as a beginner. Since I purchased this video, I took a crochet class, but I find myself going back and watching the video often for a refresher of particular stitches and techniques. If you're motivated to learn crochet, there's no better investment. The skill stays with you for a lifetime! (and the marvel you get from non-crocheters will definitely boost your confidence and keep you moving on to more complicated projects)
