If you can find this book, buy it!! Even though it was published almost 20 years ago, this styles in this book are so classic and classy, you could easily wear one out next week. The color coordination ideas, the ideas for sources of inspiration and styles, but make me drool and so very sad that Syliva Cosh died. Wonderful book and worth whatever you pay.

I just bought this book based on the reviews that promise "classic" styles. Not quite. These patterns definately scream "80's". They are oversize and are completed with huge Dynasty style shoulder pads. There are probably only two patterns in the book that, in my opinion, have stood the test of time, one of them being a very feminine looking sweater that is being modeled by a man. For a woman it would be fine. I am a little bummed that I bought this.

These designs really rawk! Nice photos, lots of interesting designs. Easily altered, she encourages this. She uses lots of mohair. There are a few kid's and men's sweaters included, too. An inspirational book, very nice.

One of her basic designs is being sold on my website, with some pattern and color alterations, it's the "Waterlily Sweater" under Women's Clothing

It is indeed unfortunate that the low reviewer here catagorized these designs as "screaming 80s". As history will bear out and as we've seen previously, all decades have highly sought after Vintage designs and the 80s are no different. Truly the only thing 'dated' about these wonderful, imaginative designs are the shoulder pads used in a couple of the sweaters(easily removed!). Sylvia Cosh is a risk taker and the sweaters themselves, while definitely crochet, has a knit sensibility about them. No doubt about it, these designs will indeed be '80s classics'.

Make your own cape or sweater. Learn how to combine mohair with various other yarns for a stunning look to your finished sweater. I'm pretty sure these designs will still be around 100 years from now.

I love the vintage crochet books the best. They help to teach you how to be creative in your own way. Sylvia Cosh is one of the all time greats in helping show all the ways to crochet. You get to see how other techniques effect the look of the end product.

The Crochet Sweater Book is the first true crochet fashion design primer that I'm aware of in the modern era. (Notice I qualified that with "that I'm aware of." Those of you with fantastic vintage collections, please feel free to jump in with suggestions to correct me.) Written by the extremely talented Sylvia Cosh (with, according to the inside but not the cover, James Walters), this book basically translates runway fashions onto your hook.

In her introduction, Cosh describes crochet as "one of the easiest and most versatile forms of fabric making" and reminds us that it's "surprisingly easy, and very satisfying, to create different textural effects, unusual color combinations, original stitch patterns or an individual garment shape."

This book highlights Cosh's favorites from her collection of "hand-dyed crochet sweaters and cardigans...exported to Europe, the United States, and Japan" and shares the patterns in "yarns readily available in the shops." In addition to her shop fashions, she includes "a range of complimentary, but rather different, designs, to ensure greater variety. However, one of my aims in preparing this book was to offer inspiration and to encourage experimentation... I hope you will use my patterns as a starting point for individual interpretation and eventually for creating your own crochet designs." A woman after my own heart!

The book begins with a section on Crochet Design, where Cosh describes some of her inspiration from nature and shares how she uses crochet stitches to interpret these themes. She also mentions her preference for "[l]arge batwing sweaters" that "seldom date." Um, I'm not totally sure I agree with that assessment, but it is good to know what her preferences are!
