5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have reference for beginner and experienced alike!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good content, lousy packaging.
Like the others in this series, the content is great. However, unlike those others, the cover is _very_ flimsy -- barely thicker than the pages it is supposed to protect. Call me silly, by I like my reference book covers to be sturdy. I received the Knitter's Companion at the same time, for the same price, and its cover is a nice, thick book board, that will stand up to...

I have crocheted all my life. Until I received this book, I never ventured further than the basic stitches or trims. With it's clear illustrations and easy to follow instructions, I've been able to venture further than my normal "basic" crochet and become creative. I now combine it in many of my pieces: both in sewing and knitting, and even got brave and crocheted my first full vest. The book features finishing techniques and instructions for multi-color crochet, filet crochet, Irish Crochet, Bead crochet, motifs, granny squares, tassels, trims and edgings just to name a few. The sections on definitions and symbols are beautifully done. And there is a wonderful chart on comparative hook sizes in US, UK and metric sizes. The book explains yarn sizes and substitutions in an easy to understand manner, as well. There are also many Hints & Tips scattered throughout the book that help add lots of *inspiration*. In my humble opinion, this 6th book in the Companion series is one any fiber worker should not be without. And it's a great size to pop into your bag and take along with your project.

5.0 out of 5 stars You will enjoy this book, December 5, 2003
This review is from: The Crocheter's Companion (The Companion series) (Spiral-bound)
This book is so very useful. It has many different techniques such as buttonhole making, bead crochet, blocking, and making gauge swatches. All of the basic stiches are included such as single crochet as are more decorative techniques like making braids, edgings, or cords.
This book is small and spiral, so you can carry it with you if you're working on an unfamiliar project and then flip to the page you need as a reference.
You'll use this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars I like this little book....., January 17, 2005
This review is from: The Crocheter's Companion (The Companion series) (Spiral-bound)
Although this jam-packed little volume is small enough to slip in your knitting/crochet basket, it holds enough information to rival larger books. Practical tools and suggestions fill the book as well as illustrations that are easy to understand (for me and I've been crocheting a long time). In case you forget the difference between the double crochet and the half-double crochet, the book includes example of those and other basic stitches as well as more ornate procedures such as making a popcorn stitch. One set of pages covers making Granny squares including `Granny square triangles' and other forms of the popular pattern. The book is printed in black and white and may not appeal to those who are color dependent. The pages are heavy with clear plastic surfaces which makes them easy to clean and long wearing, but hard to flip through if you are looking for something specific. I find THE CROCHETER'S COMPANION useful for travel, but have better books for home use.

This review is from: The Crocheter's Companion (The Companion series) (Spiral-bound)
I purchased this neat little guide when I was first learning crochet. Very convenient little book! No messing with those big books trying to keep the page open, holding your yarn etc.. etc.. I recommend getting this guide.. great for travelers~!

good companion. like the clear graphics and explanations to do things the right way when you are a begginer. do not like the fold page of the book, but just a minor thing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice reference, July 11, 2007
This review is from: The Crocheter's Companion (The Companion series) (Spiral-bound)
Small and easy to use. Have all the basic and most of the advanced techniques and much more (finishing, decorative, motifs, afghan/Tunisian, Irish, filet, hints etc). The only disadvantage is that the illustrations are drawn and in black and white; I believe colorful photos would be much easier to understand at least for advanced and decorative techniques, and also for motifs. Other than that the book is a good reference and because of the size you can carry it anywhere.
I wouldn't suggest this book for learning crochet but it's a useful tool for beginner as a reference for stitches and troubleshooting.

I have The Knitter's Companion and refer to it often. While this book is good I do not think it will become a frequently used reference book. It will be on my book shelf but not in my crochet bag.
