5.0 out of 5 stars Crocheting in Plain English

2.0 out of 5 stars Glad I got it at the library
I got four books at the library to try to learn to crochet. This one was the least helpful. The diagrams are almost useless, and the written descriptions will make a true beginner's head swim. I agree with what someone has said here--people learn differently, and if you are truly adept at turning words into actions, you might benefit from this book (although there are...

5.0 out of 5 stars Crocheting in Plain English, February 1, 2000

I decided I wanted to crochet and ordered this book. It was absolutely wonderful! The instructions were fitting for the title - they were in "plain English" and very easily understood. I had never crocheted and am now completing my third project in just a few short weeks. I have shared this book with one friend in particular that has been crocheting for years. She has now mastered stitches that she has never before quite understood. I would recommend this book for crocheters of all levels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent at explaining things, January 2, 2001
This review is from: Crocheting in Plain English: Easy-to-follow lessons in patterns, Sensible solutions to nagging problems, The only book any crocheter will ever Need. (Paperback)
This book is wonderful! I used it on my third attempt to learn crochet, and I finally got it! She explains crochet in both words and diagrams, while most instruction manuals are diagram-heavy. So, people with different learning styles can benifit from this book. Also, she has an engaging writing style, and the entire book is full of enthusiasm and encouragement for the new crocheter. I am sure that I will use this book as a reference for many years to come.

I knew nothing about crochet when I picked up this book, except that I was interested in learning it. I was crocheting within hours! The instructions make it sooo incredibly easy - this book is exactly what I was looking for. I'm looking forward to buying the author's knitting book and learning how to knit, too! I can't recommend this book highly enough for anyone who wants to learn crochet but is afraid it'll be too hard.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Beginners and Experts Alike, September 6, 2001

I've been crocheting for over 20 years and I *still* refer to this book on occasion. Even if you already know all your basic stitches, this book is so detailed, I'm sure it's got something in there that you never knew. It is filled with ideas about how to choose a decent yarn and sewing techniques that I never thought of.

I do disagree with Ms. Righetti on one point, though: She has a very strong opinion about how one must hold one's hook. Please don't let that daunt you. Hold your hook any way that's comfortable for you and you'll gain plenty of speed as you get comfortable.

5.0 out of 5 stars ALL THAT YOU'LL EVER NEED, May 2, 1999

Any crocheter at any level would agree with me when I say that this book is rife with totally useful tips and information in carrying out any crochet project. The friendly way in which the author wrote the book shows her great appreciation of the craft, which is easily transmitted to the reader. It is a GREAT REFERENCE BOOK which may just cover every crocheter's possible query from the most basic to the most complicated stitch. And the best thing is, the author makes even the most complicated crochet instruction easy! Points for refining one's craft can also be found in the book. There are loads and loads of great crochet information here, which come in handy all the time. The book can easily help transform a novice into an expert in very little time.

5.0 out of 5 stars The one crochet book you need to own., February 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Crocheting in Plain English: Easy-to-follow lessons in patterns, Sensible solutions to nagging problems, The only book any crocheter will ever Need. (Paperback)
This book is like a freshman textbook in crocheting. It's got everything you need to know to get started, and lots to work on past that. Once you know this book inside and out (and it's easy to do since it's very readable and easy to understand), you've got your foundation more than set to continue.

If you can only afford to buy one crocheting book, or only want to get one to see if you can do it or not, then get this one. Everything else will follow from this one book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners, December 29, 2002

This review is from: Crocheting in Plain English: Easy-to-follow lessons in patterns, Sensible solutions to nagging problems, The only book any crocheter will ever Need. (Paperback)
It's worth buying this book just for the pattern of Queen Anne's lace. About a year ago, I decided to take up crocheting again because I felt I was getting arthritis in my fingers. My mother had taught me to make granny squares when I was a child, but I wanted something more challenging. Also, my mother never taught me how to read a pattern. I used this book to teach myself how to read patterns. I am amazed that I can now make something now like Queen Anne's lace. The pattern simplifies instructions from a baby blanket pattern printed in the 40s. If you're like me and have no spatial sense, you'll appreciate a book like this with simple, easy to follow instructions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mom couldn't teach me, but this book did!, November 15, 2000

My mom, left handed, couldn't teach me, right handed, but this book did wonderfully. The pictures are clear and the text offers excellent description to follow. I have made several baby things, like blankets and hats. My son's favorite blanket just happens to be the first one I made. There is such a warm feeling of having your child cherish an item you made from your heart. I made that blanket over two years ago. I leave quite a bit of time between projects, so now I use the book as a reference. I highly recommend that if you want to learn crochet and even if you have a teacher, mom or otherwise, get this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Really Helpful Book, August 9, 2005

This book was really so helpful. As anyone who has gone to the "Crafts" section of the local bookstore, trying to find the right "how-to" guide can be a daunting task. After reading some reviews of this book on Amazon, I decided to go with this one, and I've never looked back. The author's style is very laid back and easy to understand. Other guides were losing me if they tried to show me how to do anything more complicated than single stitches. That was not the case with Crocheting in Plain English. The title does not lie. I was doing complicated stitches in a relatively short amount of time. I also like the stories that accompany some of the stitches, and there are plenty of pictures to give you ideas on where to take your next project. I still come back to this book as a reference again and again. It really is a must have for any crocheter-- beginning or expert.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful learning experience!!, October 1, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Crocheting in Plain English: Easy-to-follow lessons in patterns, Sensible solutions to nagging problems, The only book any crocheter will ever Need. (Paperback)
This book is a "must have" for all crocheters; newbies as well as the more experienced! Maggie Righetti certainly has the title perfect...... Crocheting in Plain English.

From the first page one can feel her excitement in teaching a much loved craft. She makes you WANT to delve into more complicated stitches and patterns.

She not only teaches stitches, but how to "read" patterns, charts, and symbols, and offers "tricks of the trade" in fixing those boo-boos.

Ms. Rigetti's humor is interspersed throughout the book and makes for very enjoyable learning AND reading!
