A must have reference!,

This review is from: Crocheting School: A Complete Course (Hardcover)
What a wonderful book! Whether you're a new crocheter or one with a lot of experience, this book is FABULOUS!!! Not only does it contain instructions -- clear, concise instructions -- on how to do just about every stitch and motif imaginable, but there are PICTURES every step of the way! That's right, COLOR pictures!! If you're like me and occasionally find even the clearest of written instructions to be cryptic and need a picture for clarification, then this book is perfect!

Fabulous.... one of the best books I have found on crochet,

it covers all the basics and then tons of stitches so you can go off and create on your own or just trim a project. Definately the one to get if you are starting out as they give great explainations and pictures to learn from. This is one of the two I always recommend to crocheters as a fundamental to have.... the other is the crochet stitch bible.

Good, but not for beginners,

This review is from: Crocheting School: A Complete Course (Hardcover)
This is a great reference book for someone who already knows the stitches of crochet. I am fairly new to crochet (I've made of couple of basic blankets) and found this book to be rather confusing for learning new stitches. I thought that it would be great since there were a lot of clear pictures, but as I spent more time with the book, I found that the pictures are not of things that you actually want to see, such as exactly where they are telling you to insert your hook. The books shows how to do a lot of advanced techniques, which I think will be helpful when I get there, but it is definitely not for a beginner.

I have crocheted for over 30 years and there is some steps that I have never heard of--working with beading, jacquard, and more. The best part is that has close-up pictures of every step.

I did a bit of crocheting as a pre-teen, but I never had a formal lesson, and my woebegone efforts sure demonstrated the lack. After a distance of 30 years, I decided to learn a bit more about the subject, and perhaps learn how it ought to be done. (Though I was surprised at how much I'd remembered!)
I looked around for a reference that would help me learn the basics. It's quite a challenge to find one, because you're trying to learn a three-dimensional craft, with movement, from a static two-dimensional page. So I was thrilled to come across Crocheting School: A Complete Course. Note that, unlike most crocheting books, this is not a book of patterns. You won't find the "usual suspects" of caps, scarves, and sweaters. What you get instead is 138 pages of instructions and photos on _how to do it_. Every part of it is superbly done. The book does not skimp on photos: there are six clear photos to show how a single crochet stitch is done, and honest, I could learn how to do it from this set of pictures. At no point does it *tell* you how to do something without *showing* you. Plus, the photos are sharp and in-focus -- something that shouldn't need to be said, but is a common failing in craft books -- and even better, the author used color intelligently to make the visual contrast stand out, such as in "variations for working filet crochet corners" using blue and orange yarn. Nor is this book for beginners only. I'll have plenty to keep me busy with the basics, and learning to make squares, circles, and to increase and decrease (all of which are covered, obviously). However, Crocheting School covers a lot more, from hairpin lace to broomstick lace to crocheting with beads to three-dimensional stitches (such as popcorn and horizontal pineapple). Great reference. If you crochet, you ought to get this book.

I'd tried new things in crocheting before this book, but really didn't have the patience for the kinds of patterns that read: dsc. *yo 3dc in 1st sc* 2dc [3dc]. Huh??? I'm from Missouri - you've got to show me. Those black and white diagrams of individual stitches like double and triple were ok, but as far as advancing beyond potholders, I wanted to crochet to relax, not decipher some ancient text so I could crochet. This book is great for those of us who want to see a picture of what it's supposed to look like each step of the way. It also shows you some really interesting effects you can create, though there aren't any real patterns per se in the book. However, once you see how the stitches are worked, deciphering those patterns that drove you nuts is a lot easier. Wish I'd found this book before I made all those potholders!

Great All Around Book,
By Ruby (Tennessee, USA) - See all my reviews

This book is excellent! I have been crocheting for many years and yet still find myself wanting new things to learn. This book covers a lot of techniques and gives you clear directions and great close up photos of each step. There is plenty of room for you to be creative with the ideas. If you are just learning or want to pick up a new stitch, this is a great book to get. It also encludes several versions of the same stitch to make projects more individual.

I came across the book in the library in Panama City Beach during our Thanksgiving vacation. I just sat down on the floor with awe. I went from cover to cover pausing at many items then started back over and looked how finely detailed the book was. Going from what you need to instruction on how to follow directions. The colors chosen are beautiful. The patterns, stiches and projects are awesome. The shapes to make are great. There is just some much good to say about the book. I'm so glad I came back across it to be able to purchase it. It is worth the investment to add to your collection, or the perfect book to start your collection!!
