Amazon.com Review

Unlike the heavier stoneware crocks found in many slow cookers, this one is made of lightweight Extreme Temperature Cookware (ETC), also called VersaWare, a stoneware so versatile it can be used on a stovetop, in an oven, under a broiler, and in a microwave. The lid is also made of ETC, which makes the five-quart pot ideal for storing pre-assembled foods in the freezer or refrigerator, and baking covered dishes in the oven. Of course, the round crock also sits in the slow-cooker base, an unusual cradle design featuring four metal legs with rubber feet. A single knob sets the cooker at low, high, and keep warm, a convenient setting for maintaining food at just the right serving temperature.

On the two cook settings, low and high, the pot can slow-cook a wide variety of stews, roasts, and soups, recipes for which are printed in an included 79-page recipe booklet. Meat can be braised first on the stovetop, and casseroles can be browned under the broiler just before serving. Both the base and crock feature loop-style handles for easy lifting. Measuring 9 by 13 by 10-1/2 inches, with internal dimensions of 9-1/2 by 4-1/2 inches, the slow cooker comes with a short, 32-inch cord that removes from the base for storage and lets the entire unit stand alone on a serving buffet. The crock and lid go right into the dishwasher for clean-up. Rival covers the slow cooker with a one-year warranty. --Ann Bieri

4.0 out of 5 stars So Far, So Fine, February 14, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Crock-Pot SC7500 5-Quart Round VersaWare Slow Cooker, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
This product rates a 5 from me, but there are features that others may find missing or not to their satisfaction. This is my first ever slow cooker. I resisted for nearly 30 years because I thought it was a superfluous thing, rendered food soupy and bland and offended my aesthetics. Recent reading led me to believe differently and led me to this one.

My trial run produced turkey thighs marinated in wine, onions, garlic and herbs. I marinated the turkey directly in the crockpot, put it in the cooker and plugged it in on high for nearly 5 hours, then removed the crock and set it on the diffuser that comes with it on the stove top and made a sauce with the cooking liquid. No messing with separate pans. Clean up was a breeze. Loved it!

What I did not love: for the first two hours, eau d' burning new car smell filled the kitchen. Don't know where it came from, but it seems to have left the premises. It did not affect the food. It has occurred to me that perhaps I should not have used it on high the first time out, but since I filed the instruction booklet where I have yet to recover it, I don't know if that is the case. It works fine now.

What others may not like: this is not programmable. What you get is low, high, and warming settings. No timer.

2.0 out of 5 stars Semi-Functional, January 14, 2005
This review is from: Crock-Pot SC7500 5-Quart Round VersaWare Slow Cooker, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
I didnt have any heating problems with this unit, other then the fact that the crock handles were insanely hot, and the unit was rather hot in general.
The major problem I have is with the weird shape and how fragile the crock is. The shape means that things dont fit in naturally. A pot roast has to be cut before it fits, a lamb roast needs to be shoved in. A bag of meatballs doesnt fit fully, but in a normal pot it does.

Bottom line, I wouldnt buy it again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overall a great buy, October 12, 2004
This review is from: Crock-Pot SC7500 5-Quart Round VersaWare Slow Cooker, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
This is a great crockpot and it is really great for sauting ingrediants prior to slow cooking. The one thing I don't like about it is that it claims you can sear with it. My idea of searing is browning on all sides over high heat. This crockpot can not be put over a high flame just low to medium-low on the stove top so I still have to use a seperate pan to sear things. Besides that one flaw I think it a great buy and slow cooks wonderfully. The cookbook that it comes with has easy and for the most part healthy recipes that are not overloaded with salt as alot of slow cooker recipes are. I also love the rustic look that it has. Overall I am very pleased with this purchase.
