So Far, So Fine,

This product rates a 5 from me, but there are features that others may find missing or not to their satisfaction. This is my first ever slow cooker. I resisted for nearly 30 years because I thought it was a superfluous thing, rendered food soupy and bland and offended my aesthetics. Recent reading led me to believe differently and led me to this one.
My trial run produced turkey thighs marinated in wine, onions, garlic and herbs. I marinated the turkey directly in the crockpot, put it in the cooker and plugged it in on high for nearly 5 hours, then removed the crock and set it on the diffuser that comes with it on the stove top and made a sauce with the cooking liquid. No messing with separate pans. Clean up was a breeze. Loved it! What I did not love: for the first two hours, eau d' burning new car smell filled the kitchen. Don't know where it came from, but it seems to have left the premises. It did not affect the food. It has occurred to me that perhaps I should not have used it on high the first time out, but since I filed the instruction booklet where I have yet to recover it, I don't know if that is the case. It works fine now. What others may not like: this is not programmable. What you get is low, high, and warming settings. No timer.

Semi-Functional,

I didnt have any heating problems with this unit, other then the fact that the crock handles were insanely hot, and the unit was rather hot in general.
The major problem I have is with the weird shape and how fragile the crock is. The shape means that things dont fit in naturally. A pot roast has to be cut before it fits, a lamb roast needs to be shoved in. A bag of meatballs doesnt fit fully, but in a normal pot it does. Bottom line, I wouldnt buy it again.

This is a great crockpot and it is really great for sauting ingrediants prior to slow cooking. The one thing I don't like about it is that it claims you can sear with it. My idea of searing is browning on all sides over high heat. This crockpot can not be put over a high flame just low to medium-low on the stove top so I still have to use a seperate pan to sear things. Besides that one flaw I think it a great buy and slow cooks wonderfully. The cookbook that it comes with has easy and for the most part healthy recipes that are not overloaded with salt as alot of slow cooker recipes are. I also love the rustic look that it has. Overall I am very pleased with this purchase.

This is a great slow cooker but the handles on the insert are delicate - one broke almost immediately.

versaware - strange shape, too hot,

I have the 6 quart oval Versaware Crockpot. I was so excited that I 'd be able to brown food before slow-cooking it! I am very dissapointed with the results of my 1st recipe - Beef Stroganoff. While browning the meat, one spot on the bottom of the crock began burning and smoking! None of my regular pots have problems with uneven cooking, so its not my stove. Then, even on low temp, with sauce, the meat stuck to the sides of the crock. I will try another recipe, but am afraid this new model cooks too hot to be useful.

Handle breaks easily,
This review is from: Crock-Pot SC7500 5-Quart Round VersaWare Slow Cooker, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
I bought this crock pot because it didn't look like a traditional country style crock pot. Unfortunately the handle broke off with the slightest bump. You can't even buy a new liner on their parts web site. This thing is a flimsy piece of crap.

The 5 quart model barely fits 4 quarts of liquid!,

I love the idea of being able to brown your meat in this model. But due to its odd shape (narrow at the base), the actual amount of flat cooking/browning space is very tiny. In addition to which, when I tested the volume with my Pyrex measuring cup - it turned out that the advertised 5 quart model only (BARELY) fits 4 quarts of water! I know I received the 5 quart model - my box and documentation clearly say so! So, I think there's something wrong with the design. Did anyone else run into this problem?

Poor Design,

I have used this three times, I now have a crock pot with no lid. The lid and pot are made from the same material so I assume the pot will break just as easily!
The lid is heavy which in it's self is not a big deal till you factor in heat. You can not hold it with out protection and with protection you can not hold it! The handle is poorly designed. You can not get fingers and hot pot holder between lid and handle, there is not enough room There is no way to get ahold of anything but the outer edge of the handle when hot, and no way to grip it safely. It slipped out of my grip 1 inch from the pot and split in half

I like the cooker well enough, but am disappointed in the durability. Both handles on the crock pot broke off within the first three times using it (not due to excessive force). The broken edges are very sharp and it's a pain to use it now (2 months old).
The recipes in the book are so-so. Overall not very happy with the purchase.

broken handle,
This review is from: Crock-Pot SC7500 5-Quart Round VersaWare Slow Cooker, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
Yep. I read what everyone said about how breakable the crock and the lid are. So I always used extreme caution when handling mine. I got it for Christmas and broke off a side handle before Valentine's Day. I didn't drop it or anything. I just tapped the handle unexpectedly when moving the crock from one side to the other of my divided kitchen sink.
I had never considered owning a Crock-Pot before seeing this one. The appearance and the idea that it would also be useful on stove top and oven was what sold me. Oh well. |
