4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
I no longer use my 3 or 5 quart round crock-pots, as this oval one has much more room to cook whole roasts, whole chickens, and whole turkey breasts. My only complaint is that the glass lid doesn't fit very well and rattles frequently when cooking. The "keep warm" feature is the best. A real meal-saver!

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor Temperature control
I have had this crockpot for sometime now and the worst thing about it is that the "low" and "keep Warm" temperature settings are both too hot. Liquids will boil and boil on either of the settings. I think of "keep warm" as just that, not continue cooking. I'm not happy at all with my purchase of this item. The size is the best thing about this crockpot. I hope to...

I think of "keep warm" as just that, not continue cooking. I'm not happy at all with my purchase of this item. The size is the best thing about this crockpot. I hope to find one that works better. Consumer Reports doesn't rate this crockpot very good either, which they wrote up after I had already had this one for sometime.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice features but NOT a true slow cooker!, January 18, 2006

I use this item most of the the time and am pleased with the purchase. That being said, the buyer should be aware that it's not a true slow cooker in that It heats rapidly then slowly.
Most items are boiling in an hr even when put on the slow mode.! Because of the quick heat your basic crock-pot recipes might be hit-and-miss in this thing. The best thing howwever to cook with this is to stay at home and keep checking on it after every couple of hrs or two.YOu can't leave items in it and return home in the evening and expect things to be done! It can actually burn them if left alone!

Still, it pinch-hits for a true slow cooker in most applications. The automatic timer in it is great because you can program it to cook for as many hours as you think it might need. It makes great soups and stews, and I have also cooked some Foreign country stews in it with sucess.

Overall, I'm glad I have one, though I'd wish I'd realized at the time of purchase that it doesn't work quite like a real slow cooker.

Got it quick. Used it 3 times so far to cook ribs. Cooked for 4 hours on high came out just as good as 8 hours on low. I am verry happy with this Crockpot.

Buy this product if you're looking for a roaster.

I love to cook. I love the design of this pot. There is one problem in that the wattage levels of this CROCK POT are a CROCK. Being new to crock pot cooking I decided to read up on the subject. Crock pots function purely on wattage and do not have a thermostat. Mine looked great. The inserts were perfect. The problem was that the temperatures did not seem right. I even melted my candy thermometer checking. A watt meter is needed to check if your crock's wattage levels. Using the P4400 Kill A Watt™ meter I purchased for about $25 I discovered my crock pot keep warm setting was the same as HIGH. I tried contacting RIVAL, but they told me I had to deal through Amazon. I was informed that I'd get a replacement, but ended up with a refund instead. Guess they know about this problem but don't want to fix it.

Almost forgot my Rival SCC658-W Smart-Pot Wattage readings were:
High: 350 Watts
Low: 2 seconds at 350 Watts then 2 seconds at 150 Watts
Keep warm: 350 WATTS. (I suspect it was supposed to be 150 Watts)

I have no complaint with Amazon, just wish Rival dealt with the problem in a more proactive manner. It's a shame such a good design can be flawed by a simple wiring error. Again Amazon was a pleasure to deal with contrary to the people at Rival. (Did I mention I was on hold for almost an hour at Rival just to find out they wouldn't help me.)

I have never used a crock-pot before I received this one. Made some chili in it and it turned out great! Was a little worried about clean-up as there was chili baked onto the sides, but it all came right off with very little effort!

Very easy to use. The crock pot is nice and big... you can easily put a whole chicken in it.

The display showing the time is a little dim and hard to read. Other than that, it is great!

I am a college student just now having an interest in cooking, and one of the things on my wish list was a slow cooker to cook ribs, let me tell you....BBQ ribs came out perfect in this. One thing I discovered is that literally hundreds of foods can me made effortlessly and easily. I would recommend this product to anyone, the features are all very nice. I have no complaints.

3.0 out of 5 stars Warm is too hot-burns food, February 15, 2006
This review is from: Crock-Pot SCC658-W Smart-Pot 6-1/2-Quart Oval Programmable Slow Cooker with Bonus Duet Insert, White (Kitchen)
I like the crockpot, except the warm setting is way too hot. Had to improvise a way to lower the temp setting in the crock pot by placing 2 metal flan cups between the ceramic crock pot and the metal burner. I am able to keep the foods from overcooking by doing this. Rival should have a way to lower the temp on WARM and not require a makeshift way to keep foods from burning.

Unfortunately, I like my old crockpot better than this one. What has rival done, even on warm my food boils. I think warm on my new crockpot is hotter than low on my old one.

After using this product for only a few months, the handle on the lid broke. The screw that holds the handle on, pulled through the threads. Clearly a defect. I called Rival customer service to get a new handle and was told I would have to order a new lid. Their waranty only covers the unit, not the lid. Very poor quality and very poor customer service. Stay away!
