Crock-Pot 6-1/2-Quart Programmable Slow Cooker with iStir Automatic Stirring

Whether cherishing memories of dinner at Grandma's house--or creating new memories with your family, this Crock-Pot 6-1/2-quart programmable slow cooker with iStir automatic stirring makes it easy to create healthy, home-cooked meals.

The slow cooker's large, oval-shaped, 6-1/2-quart capacity accommodates seven or more people--and works great for creating leftovers to enjoy later. The unit not only cooks food slowly to draw out full flavors and enticing aromas, but it also comes loaded with unique features designed with the busy mom or dad in mind.

iStir Technology

You may be the cook in your family, but that doesn't mean you have time to stand in front of the stove all day stirring. Step out of the kitchen and get on with your day--the iStir slow cooker's got you covered.

Automatically Stirs Your Meal

The innovative iStir slow cooker stirs food automatically, ensuring even heat distribution and improving the taste and texture of that favorite family recipe. Simply prepare ingredients, set the cook time, and attach the glass lid with the proper stirring attachment in place.

Choose from 2 Stirring Paddle Attachments

Choose from one of two stirring paddle attachments. The black general-purpose paddle works well for soups, chili, chowders, dips, and thinner recipes, while the wire special-use paddle works best for hearty stews, stroganoffs, and other thicker recipes. The slow cooker's classic lid handle attaches easily for meals that don't need to be stirred.

Power or Pulse for Automatic or Manual Stirring

Stirring self-activates every 30 minutes to ensure thorough mixing and even heating, until you turn it off. To initiate the stirring program, press the "power" button on the lid's control module. The slow cooker will wait two hours for the food to soften and begin cooking, then will automatically stir the food every half hour for five minutes. If it meets resistance the motor will self-reverse. You can also manually start a one-minute stir cycle at any time during the cooking process with a press of the "pulse" button.

The cord used to power the stirring mechanism has a piggy-back style that allows the slow cooker to be plugged in using only one outlet. For dishes that don't require stirring, the slow cooker provides an everyday classic handle that attaches easily to the lid.

Built-in Safety Switch

If you need to open the lid during the automatic stirring cycle, the control module provides a built-in tilt safety switch. While the lid is tilted, the stirring cycle will pause, whether you're holding the lid in your hand or you've place it upside down on the countertop. This pause will not turn off the cooker or interrupt the stirring cycle.

Digital Pre-Set Controls

The slow cooker provides digital pre-set controls for high and low settings--choose from 4 or 6 hours on high heat or 8 or 10 hours on low heat. Once the desired cooking time has elapsed, the slow cooker will automatically shift over to a keep-warm setting. iStir works with any of the time settings, and it will continue stirring, even while in keep-warm mode.

Easy Cleanup

Since the food is being stirred, there's less build-up and burnt edges on the stoneware wall to worry about, so less need for scrubbing. The removable stoneware, glass lid, and stirring paddles can be washed by hand or placed in the dishwasher for easy cleanup. The base and control module will wipe clean with a slightly damp cloth.

Enjoy mouthwatering meals--that are sure to impress friends and family--with help from the Crock-Pot slow cooker with iStir technology. In addition to its tech-savvy innovations, the slow cooker also provides stay-cool side handles and an attractive stainless-steel finish, which adds a refined sense of style to anything from weekday meals to holiday entertaining.

I've been using a Rival slow cooker for many years now and love it. I was excited to try out this CrockPot brand slow cooker with iStir, and I wasn't disappointed. I've made apple butter, pulled chicken, and a Potato Cheese Soup in it so far and they came out great.

Pros:

-It's easy to use, the settings are as simple as pressing a button.

-The lid latches on and stays in place. If you wanted to travel with it, this feature could come in handy.

-The iStir feature works like a charm and prevents burnt edges or scorched bottoms. It worked great using the "pulse" feature (misnomer as it is) when making a BBQ pulled chicken. Normally, I would pull the chicken by hand but with iStir, when it was finished cooking I just "pulsed" it a couple of times and the work was done.

-It heats evenly and consistently (a must for a slow cooker)

Cons

-It only allows for 4,6,8 or 10 hour cook times. My Rival has a digital display where I can set the timer for any amount of time. This isn't a huge issue but it would be nice.

-The outside gets a little hotter than my Rival, which makes me nervous about leaving the house for even a short time while it's on. I have to be a lot more careful when working with/near it.

-The vent holes are nice and serve a purpose but I would like the option of being able to close them, or at least some of them. Some dishes need that steam and subsequent condensation to stay juicy. I'm assuming these are in place to prevent pressure build up since the lid latches, so maybe they have to be there but it still bugs me! :)

I have never been one to use slow-cookers; in fact, I've never owned one before. In addition to the fact that my appetite doesn't have the patience, there is something about the idea of letting a pot cook a meal for you that annoys the cook in me. And when Amazon offered me the iStir Crock-Pot, with an automatic stirring attachment, I thought, well don't I get to do anything? However, as the price was right, I figured why not.

First of all, the cooker is sturdy and clearly well-made, assuaging any reservations I may have had concerning the safety of leaving it on for hours by itself. I liked the fact that it comes with two different stir attachments, one for stew and one for other types of food, and that the pot can be used without the stirring attachment at all, should you prefer to stir the food yourself.

To test it out, I decided to try one of my favorite dishes, Italian Sausage & Peppers. After washing the pot and cover in warm soapy water, I prepared my ingredients - 2 TBS of Olive Oil, 2 ½ LBS of Italian Sausage (Sweet and Hot), cut into small pieces (these I pre-cooked in boiling water for 15 minutes, just to be sure), 2 Green and 1 Red Bell Pepper (sliced), 16 ounces of Tomato Puree, 8 ounces of Tomato Paste, 2 medium chopped onions, 2 cloves of diced garlic, ½ TBS each of Oregano and Basil and 1 cup of grated parmesan cheese. I mixed the ingredients and placed them in the Crock-Pot. Using the instruction book, I connected the "stew" stirrer attachment and set the timer for 6 hours (the pot has 4 time settings, 4, 6, 8 or 10 hours). The Crock-Pot will stir the ingredients every half hour, so I did something any good cook would find difficult - I set it and forgot it.

My 2 previous pots have been original Crock-Pots so I was thrilled to be able to stick with what I consider to be the best brand.
This is a nice large deep pot with plenty of room for a whole dinner. It is very heavy so if you want something light weight then this won't make you happy but I like the heavier weight because I feel that the thickness of the glass pot makes for a more even temperature and I appreciate the fact that it doesn't feel like something that will tip over easily while it's in use.
The controls are very easy to figure out and the explanations in the enclosed flyer make it simple to understand.
The stirrer functuntion is an add on that is enclosed - you don't have to use the stirring mechanism with every meal but when you want it it's there. I especially liked the digital controls and the ability to have the machine pause when It's opened.
The lid has a nice attached rubber seal and has clips that easily lock the top down - a really nice feature for keeping the steam in and also a handy thing to have when you need to move the pot of food to another location or even travel with it.
There are 2 stirrers - one is paddles and worked really nice when I was cooking a nice batch of applesauce.
The other has prongs that are a little more forceful for moving things and I used these with success when I was making stew,
The timer sets so that the stir function doesn't start for 2 hours - alowing the food to get to a softer state before it gets stirred, but there is a pulse stir that you can use to activate a stir whenever you want.
The iStir is a great addition to a great machine!

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
This Crock-Pot is from the original slow cooker family. I liked the idea of a mechanical way of stirring food that might need it, especially if it is something that will be cooking for a long time. My older slow cooker has heat spots that would start to burn food after a while. I have used the Crock-Pot twice now. The first time I used it was to cook meat with this Campbell's Slow Cooker Sauces, Tavern Style Pot Roast with Mushrooms and Roasted Garlic, 13 Ounce (Pack of 6) that I also needed to review. It was delicious. Then I made chili which is where the stirring element came in as a star. No hot spots or burned chili. I had the pot full to start with so it had a bit extra to contend with.

Some of the pros for this item:

-The stirrer mechanism was easy to use. Press the power button on the lid and it will stir for 5 minutes every half hour.
-The lid has a very tiny vent hole so that some of the steam will vent out and things like soups, stews and chili that you might want to thicken up will although not nearly enough to dry out food.
-The lid has latches to hold the lid on during the stirring and will be also good when transporting the Crock-Pot to parties and picnics.
-Two stirrers are included for different types of stirring situations.
-You don't need to have the stirrer on if you are cooking something that doesn't need it.
-It is easy to convert from stirring to regular pot.
-Even when stirring the Crock-Pot makes no noise so it isn't irritating on the ears.

Some of the cons I noticed:

-Noticed on first washing. The pot is black and almost impossible to see if you have all the stuck on food and grease, etc.
