Dangerous to use!,
By On-G-Cute (Rochester, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Crock-Pot SCE600-EF 6-Quart Oval-Shaped Manual Slow Cooker, White (Kitchen)
Contrary to the August 29, 2005 reviewer's comments about "operator
error", this crock pot truly has a problem with heating at too high of a level, to a point of being dangerous (and yes, I did read the instruction book!). I have been using crock pots for 26 years, and never had any meals burn. This particular pot burned each of the four meals I made with it, and I used recipes which I have been making for years in my older Rival model of the same size. The last straw was when I came home to a somewhat smokey kitchen caused by a meal which burned after only 4 1/2 hours of cook time on LOW (I suppose the HI setting would be useful for launching rockets to the moon?). Had I not come home until closer to the usual 8 to 10 hours cook time for that particular recipe, I might not have had a home to walk into! I agree with reviewer J. Jarrard - my foods burned primarily on just one side of the crock. The heating element is not only too hot, but it also heats unevenly. I have read in other reviews that in recent years Rival has set the temperature of their pots higher for food safety purposes. Does anyone know if this is true, and if so, what other options are out there (i.e. - other brands, or perhaps other Rival models which don't have this problem)? Thanks!

Works Good for Me,

I got this crock at Costco for 39.99 (I got the black model) and from the beginning it has been fantastic. I believe there would be issues with people not using the right amount of food in this one though, since it is so big...the smaller amount of food will cook faster and may burn, like the oatmeal I tried overnight. It just was not filled enough.
I do not use it while I am away during the day, because I am just nervous about malfunctioning appliances in general, but I do use it every weekend for roasts, soups, stocks, chili, etc. It makes amazing BBQ ribs - better than my husbands, who has a big outdoor smoker! I bought the cook book "Not Your Mother's Crockpot" and love it too...this book is not the "dump a can" kind of cookbook - you need to prep for it, but great recipes. This cookbook also is careful to tell you what size crock to use. Like I said earlier, it pays to read that part, since the recipe said to use a small crock pot and I ignored it and used my 6 qt. I would say the only criticism is that the sides do get hot, so I put it on a large hot plate when I cook with it. I have not had problems with the lid. It is not precision fitting, but steam does not leak out, and it is very quiet. All in all a great product, and I am honestly hooked and thinking about a smaller one for my overnight hot oatmeal.

First Crockpot I've used that burns food!!!,

I bought this Crockpot at Wal-Mart and cooked one of the recipes from the booklet that was included (pork chops with rice). The lid did not fit securely - it left gaps in the front and back allowing steam to escape. When I came home the food was burnt, but only on one side of the crockpot. The heating element must be uneven. I didn't try any other recipes, just returned it to the store!

Very Disappointing,
This review is from: Crock-Pot 6-Quart Oval Manual Slow Cookers, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
I don't think I've ever reviewed a product, but I need to express my dismay with this Crock Pot. My parents had a much older Crock Pot (no hinge, circular type) and it worked perfectly. I picked up this model thinking it'd be fine based off my previous experience with Rival products - boy was I wrong!
First impression: the lid didn't close all the way and allowed steam to escape as mentioned in other reviews. Coming back 6 hours later to find my pork roast slightly burnt and dry wasn't what I had in mind for a slow, steam cooker. I should have just returned it right then, but didn't. After about the second or so use, the lid handle broke. It was weakened by the heat (I presume) and bent up until it broke when I tried to open it (of course, it was out of warranty by this point). I managed to make due by opening it with a fork. That was, of course, until the hinge piece in the back broke after about the fifth use. Oddly enough, with both connector pieces broken, the lid sits better (no steam escaping). Taking the lid off is --- interesting, though. Overall impressions: Very cheaply made and probably won't buy a rival again. Customer support leaves something to be desired and there's no (in stock) replacement parts, not that you could completely replace what broke on mine through spare parts. Just throwing money away if you buy this.

HORRIBLE crock pot, DO NOT BUY!,

I bought this crock pot at Target on sale for $30 a few months ago. As others have mentioned the lid did not fit securely. I was sent a "replacement" crock pot. The replacement crock pot lid was fine although very difficult to remove to clean. Today the hinge broke. I'm going to call the company and see what they can do. This crock pot is awful and I do not recommend it to anyone.

Evil in a pot...,

I love the idea of the hinged lid that locks, but it is a pain in the buttocks to get the lid off. I've just spent the last ten minutes fighting the lid, trying to detach it from the pot. You can't access the ceramic pot unless the hinged lid is off! How annoying!
This slow cooker is going back tomorrow. As convenient as it is to not have to put the lid down or juggle it while stirring, it's not worth the hassle. Do yourself a favor and just get a different model.

I got this as a gift, and used it 3 times. I handwashed it because the lid is so delicate. It completely broke after the third time. I tried to cook with it, using a fork to lift the lid up and burnt my fingers. I tried to contact Rival customer service...what a joke. I would not recommend this unit to anyone. Out of fairness to rival, I have a crockpot with a normal lid that I have used for 7 years now without a problem.. The genius who designed this lid should be fired!!!

I actually bought this crockpot from a local Costco, but after reading the only review listed I thought I should add my two cents. I literally just bought this last week (8/25/05) and made a potroast over the weekend. It worked AWESOME!! I honestly think crockpots don't work for some people because of operator error, something to be said for reading the directions. I had no smoke, no burnt meal, no rattling lid, no under-cooked meal. Ok, the sides get hot but that is where the heating element is, not a big deal. Slow cook on 10 hours, put enough liquid in, brown your meat well beforehand .. this is not rocket science. The crockpot is very beautiful and functional, super easy to clean up. I used some of the left-over juices to make gravy for the meal and the rest made a phenomenal french onion soup that surpasses any I've ever had. Way to go Rival!!
