Great for Indian cooking for dhals, biriyani & more,
By V. Herbert "Goldmohur" (Kilauea, HI) - See all my reviews I've put my pressure cooker away since this cooks without any mess. It works well for Indian sambar, rasam, chole, vegetable curries and biriyani. Indian cooking can be messy and the slow cooker helps to keep the kitchen very clean and without splatters.

perfect for small whole-grain meals ready when you need them,
By I bought this unit to make hot cereal so I could offer my husband a hot breakfast without having to (painfully) alter my own sleep schedule. This is a great size for our family of three. I fill it with water and whole grains around 9 pm. My husband takes his breakfast at 5 am and unplugs the unit. When my son and I get up around 6 or 7 am, the cereal has cooled to a perfect temperature to eat right away without exceeding the "maximum 2 hours at room temperature" timeframe for food safety. I want to eat healthy, but I'm not an accomplished cook. This 1 1/2 qt crockpot, together with the 2 qt model I use for dinner, allows me to cook whole grains and other "real" foods without needing any great skill or time to stand by the stove. I get to play with my son while still offering him old-fashioned home cooked meals.

not a good crockpot,
I have been using crockpots and cooking successfully in them for years, and this was my third. I wanted a small crock for morning cereal and dips. This crockpot has a major defect - no heat settings. It is either on or off. There is no low vs high. Hence my first attempt at cereal making resulting in the cereal burning on the bottom of the crock, and on the sides. What a surprise! This crock is being returned and I am going to try the Proctor Silex 1.5, which has three temp settings for a similar price.

Good size, occasional hot spot (updated 6/07),
June 2007 update to my original review: I still have the same pros/cons for this product. I've used it many times since I wrote that review and the hot spot problem has not changed. I've found some work-arounds, though; for example, when I make oatmeal overnight, I put the crock pot on a timer (the kind you use to set your lamps to turn on/off while you're on vacation) and have the oatmeal start cooking at about 1 AM and I also added extra water to the crock for the oatmeal. So after months of use, I still feel the same way about this item and have found it useful enough that I'm willing to experiment with work-arounds instead of just getting rid of it.
Original review: I ordered this crock pot to replace an older version that didn't have a removable crock. What I like about it: - Crock is removable and dishwasher safe. - Size is perfect for 2-person meals. - Doesn't take up much storage space. - Glass lid allows you to see the contents. My concerns: - Seems to have a hot-spot on one side but it's only an issue if I leave the dish cooking longer than I should (such as if I get home from work really late.) - The lid doesn't look like it fits well; however, I don't think I'm losing any heat. So it might just be an aesthetic issue. I have used this crock pot 6 times in the past month and am very happy with it. So far the "hot-spot" issue has affected two meals and I was able to just cut off the overcooked part. But that's the reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5. A general warning to anyone who is not familiar with crock pot cooking: the days of putting a dish in the crock pot before you leave for work and it being perfectly done when you return home are over, in my opinion. The new slow cookers/crock pots cook *much* faster and hotter than those our mothers owned in the 70's. My large, 5-quart Rival crock pot actually boils when I turn it on high! I suggest you experiment with yours on a weekend before you go off and leave it cooking unattended while you are at work for 9 or 10 hours. I find that if a crock pot recipe calls for cooking on low for 9 hours, it only takes 6 hours in my small or large crock pots. If you enjoy good oatmeal try the oatmeal recipe in the instruction manual. I ate the instant/microwave oatmeal for years but have now become hooked on the "real" oatmeal we make overnight in the crock pot.

too hot for overnight oatmeal,
I purchased this to make overnight oatmeal (1 cup steel-cut oats to 4 cups water). The heat is too high in this slow cooker so the oatmeal on the bottom and sides was cooked hard and brown, like a taco shell. I'm going to look for a small slow cooker with more than one temperature setting.

Rival Crock-Pot,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This crockpot is just the right size for my spouse and I. What I didn't like about it was that it has no on/off switch, and it cooks a little too hot. It says on the package that it cooks on the same low setting as the bigger ones, but I found that it was higher than that. My food did turn out OK, but it's a good thing I was home to check on it, or it would have burned!

Mixed feelings.,

I am online buying a crockpot to replace this one. I have been using this for about 6 months, probably less than 10 times total. The lid handle fell off in the dishwasher, so I have to replace it. I do love the size for our small family (2 adults, 3 toddlers/preschoolers) as we do not usually eat leftovers. The size makes the perfect amount. However, as I am shopping for a replacement, I will not be getting this one. Why? Not only did it break with minimal use, but the lack of heat settings makes it less convenient than a crockpot that has a "low" and "keep warm" setting. There were times that I left it in a bit too long and it scorched the food on the edges. This would not have been the case if there were other settings. I was surprised that there are actually other, respectable, brands that have these features, and are actually cheaper. I will be going that route!
