Poor design and quality control,
This review is from: Crock-Pot SCVC600-SS 6-Quart Smart-Set Premium Slow Cooker, Chrome (Kitchen)
First, the defects...bought new, but the plastic control plate (with the dial and buttons) didn't fit onto the metal base well...so askew on the right side that the temp probe was impossible to plug in. Since it was rare-to-unlikely I'd ever need the probe for my uses I decided to see how well the unit worked. The buttons and dial were sketchy...sometimes a button press or dial turn would yield no response on the display, sometimes it would. I cooked a sample 4-qt recipe in it, on low. Low must be the new high at Rival, because I noticed the food was already overcooked and encrusted on the sides in 4 hours despite being a 6-8 hour recipe. Then, there's the pot itself...I noticed on close inspection during hand-washing that there was a barely visible (I felt it before I saw it) hairline crack inside (which ran fully across the bottom and an inch or two up each side). Thinking it was only a surface/paint defect, I flipped it over and noticed the crack was visible on the bottom as well, in the same place, so it was clearly not just cosmetic. Add to all this the somewhat flimsy plastic side handles (which I would scarcely trust when empty) and indeed an overall abundance of cheap plastic parts. I really can't recommend this product at all, even though it sounded nice on paper. I sent this defective unit back for refund and will likely eventually try the Hamilton Beach 3-in-1 model instead, which at least appears to be a bit better crafted (less plastic, simpler/less-problematic controls, etc.). Not happy with Rival's design or implementation based on this model.

Works great, but no stoneware replacement available,

This was my upgrade to my original 4qt cooker and it works great. The top cover is a little clunky, but it works. Big disappointment when I went to call to get a replacement stoneware because I cracked the original while cleaning it. I called months apart and they had no replacements or were not planning to make more. They offered liners, but who wants to cook in plastic!?

Only two weeks old and the plastic cover hinge broke. Called rival and was told there was no parts available for either the hinge (held on by two easily replaceable screws)or the complete lid assembly. They told be to take it back to the store and see if I could get a replacement.

I love this crockpot! My husband and I were looking for a larger one and liked the idea of a more automation. The warming feature is excellent. The pot cooks at the temperature selected and we have had great success with it. I would highly recommend. Looks good too!

I have used crock pot's for years. The last 4 years i used the rival smart crock pot. It was 'ok' but not great, you had high for 4 or 6 hours and low for 8 or 10. What if I needed/wanted to cook on low for 5 hours or 12 hours? I had to make sure I was there to change it. This one you can set the time anyway you want, as well as high (or low) for a bit and then it can change to the other setting. It has a prob (I have not used yet) to use on meat, or corn bread, etc. to cook it just the right time and temp. It also has a warm setting (not used yet but will..soon...only had this for 3 days.)
How many times to i make the rolls first, then the rest in oven or microwave, and end up with cold rolls?! Now I can pop them in the crock pot on warm and they will stay just right till ready to eat them. I only gave it 4 stars as I have not used it a lot yet, and it IS a bit pricy.

I would not recommend buying this product! All of the lid parts came off in less than a year, with a screw ending up in my grand daughter's dinner.

The lid broke and there are no replacement lids available from Rival. It is upsetting because it is a good cooker, but I now have to cover it with foil which is bogus.
EDIT: 12/21/10 As follows : This cooker is barely a year old and the temp control is already shot. It gets way too hot, enough to burn the food to an inedible level, and MELT THE PLASTIC HANDLE off the right side. I am disappointed in it now. I am replacing this with the "Gordon Ramsay slow cooker".

We've been using this slow cooker for more than 1 year and a half now and we still love it. Works great. We use it every 2 weeks or so. Even my cousin had the same one for Christmas not last Christmas but the year before and she also loves hers. No complains over here.

Cooks too Fast. Lid a bit clunky,

I've had this crock pot just about a year. It's great for things like soup & Chili. I've not had as much luck with meats. It cooks much faster than any recipie. (Cooks as if it's on high versus low.) A recipie that calls for 8 hours miniumum on low is done in about 4 hours.
The probe does not work consistently. Today I put a roast in and it read 212 immediately and went to simmer which supposedly happens when it reaches the temp. needed for meat. I used my own digital meat thermometer and it ready 45 when inserted. I also just broke the hinge on the lid. It's always been clunky. I am surprised it lasted me a year. Overall, I like the ability to set whatever time I want rather than 4 or 6 on high or 8 - 10 on low. That's the main reason I purchased it. I also like that you can combine cooking on low and high with one program. That's a nice feature for recipes that call for an hour on high and then turn down. |
