4.0 out of 5 stars Smart-Pot Crock-Pot
I have used this crock pot multiple times since receiving it. Every time I have been extremely pleased with the results. I like the removal lid. I like the times available to program on high and low. I recommend this pot highly. Never has any food stuck on the bottom. The outside does get hot, that is the only drawback I have found with this crock pot.

I bought this just over a year ago and we've used it extensively. As long as you do soups and very moist meats (lots of liquids) it works fine. It is much too hot for most slow cooking and it will dry out foods on the warm setting.

Even with all of that, I got used to using it. However, the handle to the lid just broke off today and you must buy a whole new lid if you are out of warranty. That is $18.00!!! Rival says that this isn't a known issue and so maybe I'm the unlucky one. Also, when I called customer support, they were very unwilling to give me information about this problem. It seemed to me that they are aware of it, but don't want it publicized. When I asked the rep how long she had worked there, she replied that she couldn't give me that information because of "security concerns". I just wanted to know what level of experience she had!

If you are not going to leave it alone for very long or you only cook with lots of liquids, this may work out for you as it did for me for a year. If you want to have a long lasting more versatile slow cooker, you should probably look elsewhere. And after reading the reviews on most of the other Rival crockpots, I have decided that my initial feelings were justified and I will take Rival products out of my considerations.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not so hot, July 23, 2007

This is a nice looking crockpot, and the removable crock is a big improvement over the old models. But I have found that it gets too hot and cooks food too quickly. If I put in six boneless chicken breasts with sauce in the morning and set it on low, the chicken is dried out and falling apart by dinner time. I bought the larger model because I occasionally do a turkey breast, and even that is way overcooked after 8 or so hours on low. This defeats the purpose of a crockpot. I am going to try a different kind...

This review is from: Crock-Pot SCVP600-W Oval 6-Quart Smart-Pot Slow Cooker, White (Kitchen)
I have owned Rival crockpots for many years-many different models, and have always loved them. Still do. I recommend Rival whenever anyone asks. I was really excited when I purchased this one because I work long hours and could only use my Crockpot on weekends because the recipes were shorter than my workday! So, I bought this one. I stayed true to the Rival brand because it had never let me down before. I have to say-the other reviews about it running hot is true. Also, I do not like that I have only a few options for cook times- 4,6,8,10 hours. A lot of my recipes have 5 hours, or 12 hours-what to do then? I thought programmable meant just that, but it doesn't. So, if you are looking to solve that busy lifestyle, I would not recommend this particular pot. I do still love Rival though!

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't live without it!, July 3, 2007
This review is from: Crock-Pot SCVP600-W Oval 6-Quart Smart-Pot Slow Cooker, White (Kitchen)
This is my first crock pot and I don't know what I did without it! I'm using it less in the summer, but the winter months were vastly improved by the soups, stews, roasts, and other warm comfort foods I made in this!
I haven't had any problems with the settings, high being "too high," etc. Has worked perfectly for me!

1.0 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE CROCK-POT, November 11, 2007
This review is from: Crock-Pot SCVP600-W Oval 6-Quart Smart-Pot Slow Cooker, White (Kitchen)
HORRIBLE. This is not a slow cooker crock-pot. The temp is way too high, food cooks way too fast. Soups should never each a boiling point (on the low setting) within the first half hour of being turned on. I've ruined several meals trying to work this crock-pot. I contacted Rival about the problems I was having and was told this is just how they're made now...it kind of defeats the purpose of being a slow cooker. It's not safe to turn on, even on the low setting and leave it.

The leg broke in the first month, the lid handle broke after 6 months. This unit cooks too hot. You can get used to it but you shouldn't have to.

1.0 out of 5 stars Look for Another Product, November 19, 2008
This review is from: Crock-Pot SCVP600-W Oval 6-Quart Smart-Pot Slow Cooker, White (Kitchen)
This is just an awful crockpot. Admittedly it's rather inexpensive but does have good functionality. But on low it will boil the food. On low it will burn the food onto the side of the crock. This is on low, not high. Maybe I received a unit with a poor thermostat. But I will be purchasing another one from a different manufacturer. It even boiled cheese dip...on low. I've used a few different crock pots over the years so I am not a novice.

We had an old Rival crock pot from the 80s that worked great, you could put a frozen roast in it on low in the morning, go to work, and come home to perfectly cooked roast after work. It finally gave up and died... so we went on a quest for a new one.

Bought this Rival oval crock pot. It got way to hot, it's only good for making boiled jerky out of your roast! This despite putting it on low. Even trying to cook on low for a mere four hours, this will turn a roast into a tough, boiled piece of leather. Tried putting in a frozen roast, it will STILL turn your roast into jerky in four hours!!!!

We thought perhaps Hamilton Beach would be a better choice, so we went back and spent the 40 bucks to buy a "stay and go" digital model. Same problem. Apparently all the "new and improved" crock pots have been made much hotter than the old ones, and cook much faster. This makes them virtually worthless for making a decent roast or slow cooked batch of stew. My old crock pot from the 80s made every roast so tender it fell apart. These new ones we bought will both speedily boil your roast into an unappetizing chunk of leather that is difficult to cut, let alone chew.

GET WITH IT Rival and Hamilton Beach! Make a NEW slow cooker that actually... ahem... COOKS SLOW.... on a LOW temperature for 8 hours or so, or don't bother trying to sell it to me as a "slow cooker". I'm going to some second hand stores hoping I can buy a REAL slow cooker in serviceable condition from back when they made them to BE slow cookers... rather than just an electric boiling pot.

Again, note: In four hours, on LOW temperature, these new ones will turn your roast into boiled tough jerky. Don't waste your money until Rival and Hamilton Beach wake up!

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't use this pot around small children, February 3, 2008
By
Stephanie (philadelphia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Crock-Pot SCVP600-W Oval 6-Quart Smart-Pot Slow Cooker, White (Kitchen)
I've had this crock pot for a couple of years, and I rarely use it. I agree with other reviewers that it gets too hot too fast, and tends to overcook food.

But that is not my main concern. For me, the biggest problem with this crock pot is that the metal exterior of the pot gets extremely HOT. I mean untouchably hot. I suppose this is the component that is meant to heat the ceramic insert. I have 2 small children, and on the rare times that I do use this pot, I have to put it in a far-away corner of my kitchen for fear that someone will get severly burned if they touch it.

I am shopping for a new crock pot that is safer. I wish I had known before I got this that it heated from the outside-in. I would not recommend it.
