5.0 out of 5 stars Works great but gets really hot, January 9, 2008
By
R. Gough (West MI United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have been using the rival brand of crock pots for years now and love them. I recieved this as a gift last Christmas and these new smart pots do get hotter than a older modle of crock pot.

It cooks faster but I have never had anything burn.

I did a water test for tempature and used this exact modle and also tested my older modle with the turn knob for off, low, high.

I filled both pots to a couple inches below the rim then left them on for 2 hrs before taking my 1st reading and after that I increased the tempature settings and let them sit for a hour before taking another reading. I used my digital thermometer that i use for candy to measure the temp.

These are my results. the temps are listed in order of "warm", "low", "High" settings (the old pots don't have warm so it doesnt apply) on the pots and readings are taken in fahrenheit.

Smart pot: 122, 154, 174

older pot: na, 127, 167

so as you can see the new moddles do get hotter and you will have to take that into concideration when figuring your cooking time.

i have not used the smaller pot that comes with this set. I have intended to but with a family of 5 It just hasn't happened.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dig this Crockpot!, August 6, 2007
By
Joanna (Albany, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This crockpot is pretty big, cleans up easily, (I've never spent more than 5 or so minutes rinsing it out, I think it's some sort of special porcelain,) and it sets itself to "warm" when it's cycle is done, (a variety of hours, but I almost always use 4 hours.) It is attractive, just a simple plain white. I bought mine as a present for me and my husband and recommended it to my mother in law, and to the group home where I work. They purchased the same crockpot on my recommendation. It feeds seven or eight with no problem. And for just two, freeze your stew to have on a fall or winter night when you don't have time to cook. It would make a great wedding present or just to keep for yourself. Mine did not die, and I carry it around a lot, to family dinners, etc. In fact, it's in my car right now. This one appliance makes my life much easier. (I may even have grown a muscle from carting it around so much, it's one drawback is its weight, but I kind of like that, too, it's a very substantial crockpot.) Oh, wait, there is one other little thing to know about it: do not put its lid in the oven, the handle on top melts - a minor design flaw - it does not melt from regular use, only when exposed to heat directly. Supposedly, you may also purchase accessories for it, too, like a bread making insert or something. Although intriguing, I have not explored these options. Perhaps the little dipper is one such accessory. My particular pot came witht a custom-fitted insulated bag that velcros around the pot for carrying to dinner functions.

2.0 out of 5 stars Beware the handle!, December 13, 2008
I love my Rival Smart Pot, but beware the handle! After less than a dozen uses, the poorly designed handle broke, and fell off. Rival has no replacements for the handle, and are (not surprisingly) always out of stock on the complete lid.

At a pot luck at work the other day, there were 4 different Rival crock pots missing handles on the lid. Rival NEEDS to change or replace this defective part!
