I love my Rival Smart Pot, but beware the handle! After less than a dozen uses, the poorly designed handle broke, and fell off. Rival has no replacements for the handle, and are (not surprisingly) always out of stock on the complete lid.

I have been using the rival brand of crock pots for years now and love them. I recieved this as a gift last Christmas and these new smart pots do get hotter than a older modle of crock pot.

It cooks faster but I have never had anything burn.

I did a water test for tempature and used this exact modle and also tested my older modle with the turn knob for off, low, high.

I filled both pots to a couple inches below the rim then left them on for 2 hrs before taking my 1st reading and after that I increased the tempature settings and let them sit for a hour before taking another reading. I used my digital thermometer that i use for candy to measure the temp.

These are my results. the temps are listed in order of "warm", "low", "High" settings (the old pots don't have warm so it doesnt apply) on the pots and readings are taken in fahrenheit.

Smart pot: 122, 154, 174

older pot: na, 127, 167

so as you can see the new moddles do get hotter and you will have to take that into concideration when figuring your cooking time.

i have not used the smaller pot that comes with this set. I have intended to but with a family of 5 It just hasn't happened.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dig this Crockpot!, August 6, 2007

This crockpot is pretty big, cleans up easily, (I've never spent more than 5 or so minutes rinsing it out, I think it's some sort of special porcelain,) and it sets itself to "warm" when it's cycle is done, (a variety of hours, but I almost always use 4 hours.) It is attractive, just a simple plain white. I bought mine as a present for me and my husband and recommended it to my mother in law, and to the group home where I work. They purchased the same crockpot on my recommendation. It feeds seven or eight with no problem. And for just two, freeze your stew to have on a fall or winter night when you don't have time to cook. It would make a great wedding present or just to keep for yourself. Mine did not die, and I carry it around a lot, to family dinners, etc. In fact, it's in my car right now. This one appliance makes my life much easier. (I may even have grown a muscle from carting it around so much, it's one drawback is its weight, but I kind of like that, too, it's a very substantial crockpot.) Oh, wait, there is one other little thing to know about it: do not put its lid in the oven, the handle on top melts - a minor design flaw - it does not melt from regular use, only when exposed to heat directly. Supposedly, you may also purchase accessories for it, too, like a bread making insert or something. Although intriguing, I have not explored these options. Perhaps the little dipper is one such accessory. My particular pot came witht a custom-fitted insulated bag that velcros around the pot for carrying to dinner functions.

5.0 out of 5 stars love it!, January 6, 2009
I bought this about six years ago, and have been thrilled with it ever since. It is perfect for cooking a moist, fragrant (using herbs) ~7lb roaster chicken, cooking dry beans overnight or during the day (without soaking!), chili, soup, tomato sauce from those big, cheap Costco cans of tomatoes to freeze, etc... we've also made shepherd's pie (making the potatoes separately and browning in the oven) and other dishes. It does get a little hot, but that seems normal to me - I just make sure nothing surrounds it while cooking, especially paper or plastic. I've never had any problems with the handles. It cleans easily unless something like cheese has burnt around the edges, and if it has, just soak for a while. The only time I've had a problem with overcooking was early on when I had not read the directions first (duh) and put lone chicken breasts in the bottom with some sauce and they turned out very dry. You are supposed to fill it one-half to 3/4 full for proper heat distribution. For this reason, I've been thinking lately of getting a smaller slow cooker for smaller portions. I also love the four different time settings and the keep warm function. If you know you love slow cookers already, you might consider one of the new, more versatile ones that let you input your own time setting, etc., but if you are new to slow cooking or just like the basics, this is a fantastic one to choose!

ps. I suggest you get the white one... my in-laws got a black one, and it is very difficult to see when cleaning to make sure it is completely clean. There's no second guessing with the white one!

5.0 out of 5 stars The mother of all crock pots!, January 7, 2009
If you have a family, or entertain larger groups, this is the crock pot you want.

I did more research than I care to admit before finally settling on this model/brand/etc. There were better deals elsewhere, but this price is more than worth it for this product.

I have braised, made stews, sauces, and even corned beef in this not-so-little guy, and all have come out great. I never had an "old crock pot" so I can not attest to the heat issues, but I have had none. Just make sure you are home with it the first time you cook, and you'll get a good idea quickly of how much water and what not you would need in the future.

It cooks really evenly, and I have not had a problem with things burning when it is sat out to just keep warm when I'm entertaining.

The little guy that comes with the big pot is also cool, though I haven't figured out how to best use him yet. My husband and I treated ourselves to some chocolate fondue (which worked pretty well) with the little version, but I think there's probably more potential there.

The only downside to this product is that it's big and takes up a good chunk of space. That said, if you need a 6 quart crock pot, it's because you need something that can fit a lot of food! :)

Overall, a good product made by the classic company. If you play smart, I promise you will love this one.

I like the size and features of this crock pot - especially the fact that it automatically switches to "keep warm" when finished. Unfortunately, it simply died after about 5-10 uses. I'm pursuing a warranty replacement now.

I have enjoyed and used the crock pot every chance I get. It has been a problem getting things cooked just right but each time it is close to perfect. On low I need 9 hours and find I have to keep track of time to cook the meal just 9 hours as the cooker is 8 and 10 on low. So outside of a variable timer it is the best applience in the kitchen.

2.0 out of 5 stars Gets too hot, September 21, 2009

We've had this model for about two years and I can say that 80% of the time, it burns the contents. We've tried to make adjustments assuming that it was us and not the appliance. One example: Crock Pot Pepper Steak (a common recipe). Put it on for 10 hours. Checked it after 6 hours and the meat burnt.

We now use everything at 10 hours and check it at 4 hours. Not much else we can do until we find something better. Probably go with one that has dials. Electronics take the control out of cooking.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor Quality - broke within 6 months, October 9, 2009
Bought mine at [...] in Stainless steel, but it is the same model. Worked great for a couple of months. Then the handle broke off of the lid. Could not be repaired. Then, it stopped working altogether. I plug it in and it lights up, but when I try to pick a heat level (high or low) and a time to cook, it won't work. Must have overheated the control panel. I would have been better off getting something with a knob. Now I have to figure out how to return it - if I can. I won't be buying this brand again. Really disappointing.
