This is a nice Crock Pot in a size that is often called for in slow cooker recipes. The lid has an attached rubber gasket and when latched, forms a secure seal. The gasket also helps maintain the moisture level in the pot, since even without the latches (which aren't used while cooking), the lid seats better than the lids on many slow cookers. I didn't test the security of the seal by transporting the Crock Pot in the car, as you would for a potluck, but there's no doubt it will avoid spills better than one without the latching feature. I think the bonus Little Dipper pot will be handy, as well.

Two things bothered me, though. The first is very trivial: There is no indicator light to show that the pot is turned on. Of course, you can see whether the dial is set to cook, but a light is handy and reassuring. More than once while I was trying out the pot, I glanced across the kitchen and thought "Oh no, I forgot to turn it on." Not a deal breaker, but a nice little feature to have.

Not so trivial is that the pot runs very hot, almost certainly too hot to use as a "set and forget" appliance for the average working person who would like to leave it for 8-10 hours. On low, the pot reached boiling at the 4-hour mark, so the food was no longer cooking slowly. At 8 hours, the temperature was 218 degrees, and the pot was at a fast boil (on the high setting, the temperatures were nearly identical but got there faster).

I tested to see whether cooking on warm might be an alternative, but in 6 hours, the warm setting reached only 125 degrees, which would mean not only that foods would not cook in 8-10 hours, but worse, that uncooked food would be sitting at an unsafe temperature for a long time.

There are a some fixes you can try.

There are lots of things to like about this Crock Pot. The larger size is really helpful when it comes to slow-cooking a roast or a chicken. The the side latches come in very handy for moving the Crock Pot from one point to another. The Little Dipper works very well; I have made a number of very nice hot dips without any problems.

HOWEVER --- some of the criticisms of other reviewers are spot-on. This thing does run hot, and if I am preparing a dish which requires 8-10 hours of slow-cooking, I return to my older, smaller (but more reliable) Crock Pot. This thing cooks way too quickly, and if you left a cut of meat in this for 8 hours at the temperatures it tends to run, it would obliterate the meat. I use this newer Crock Pot only on weekends when I can monitor things, and every time I have used it, I have had to cut short the cooking time by two or more hours. This is not a good thing if you are depending on this to have dinner ready on a week day after work.

Of lesser concern is the lack of an indicator light. It seems trivial, but it really isn't. I have had enough power surges in my house over the years that I have had to re-set the older Crock Pot. If not for its indicator light, I wouldn't have known that it was no longer in cook mode. Power glitches happen; how are you supposed to tell if everything is working properly?

While there is plenty to recommend here, I can't really say that this will ever become a go-to device in my house. There are better slow cookers available than this.

As one who has been using a crock pot over the years, what caught my eye on this one was its low oval shape. I like the fact that it's lower and wider than my old crock pot (the old one was higher, not as wide and was shaped round). I feel that the design on this new product is safer, the pot is easier to carry since it's oval and I particularly like that you can actually lock in the glass cover as there two locks that snap in (one on each side); this feature comes in really handy especially if you have to transport the crock pot in your car and are concerned with spilling any food, and the fact that it's lower, there's less of a chance of the crock pot flipping over. Also, I want to add that the crock pot feels pretty sturdy when I pick it up.

I also really liked the the "Little Dipper". I tried it with a couple of different dips and it worked really great for keeping the dips hot; my only problem with it is that the inside liner does not come out for easy cleaning where the the liner in the larger pot can easily be removed for cleaning. But overall, I think it's a great product and I highly recommend it! Bon Appetit!

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
We're a large family and use the slow cooker several times a week year-round. Obviously, that means our slow cookers don't last as long as they might for some people (about 2 years typically). With one or two exceptions, we've always purchased the Crock Pot brand because we just wanted a basic slow cooker that was large enough for a family of 8. Every model tends to have a little extra feature added which makes them even more handy to have around.

This one is my favorite yet. We now have two of these, one is a year old and one is brand new. This model has everything I want in a slow cooker and the added improvements make it even better.

What I like:

-large capacity. We're able to fit a large pot roast with veggies in this one with no problem.
-the fasteners on the lid. I think it cooks things much better because the steam isn't causing the lid to bounce around and allow all of the liquid to evaporate. I can't imagine carrying this around to church potlucks, but it is possible without worrying the lid will fall off.
-the manual dial temperature. I've had slow cookers with digital read outs and those are always the first thing to fail.
-longer cooking time. I've had slow cookers that had a 6 hour maximum cooking time so I'd have to make sure to be home mid-day to reset it or else we would come home to a cold/half cooked meal.
-lid and crock are dishwasher safe, easy clean up. The smaller slow cooker does not have a removable crock, so it's a little more work to clean but no big deal.
-very basic, simple, works and a good price.

What I don't like:

-I wish it had an on/off indicator light but it's not that big of a deal since you can just look at the dial to see if it's in the "off" position.
