2.0 out of 5 stars Too Much Bug Spray
Victory Garden is a beautiful book but was written before we became more conscientious about pesticides. I would buy a newer version (New Victory Garden).

5.0 out of 5 stars EASILY THE BEST GARDENING BOOK EVER!, February 5, 2004

This review is from: Crockett's Victory Garden (Hardcover)
CROCKETT'S VICTORY GARDEN is the first and last gardening book you need buy. It is really that simple. Whether you are a novice or an experienced green-thumb this book is the only gardening guide you need in your library.

Divided into chapters by month, James Underwood Crockett provides a comprehensive overview of gardening activities the year round. Each chapter head offers a quick overview of each item in the garden needing attention that month. Subheads give complete details as to how to proceed.

Additionally, Crockett offers helpful hints regarding everything from composting to cultivating and from terrariums to trellises. He even provides a comprehensive planting calendar that allows the reader to customize his schedule depending on where he lives in the country.

If you ever get a chance to watch the old PBS program of which the book was a companion I highly recommend it. So, happy gardening for this year and for the future.

I have a warm spot in my heart for this book, and will keep it forever. I learned to garden on PBS with this sweet, gentle man, and I will forever be thankful that he taught me the magic of making things grow.
Yes, it's dated, and I don't use as much insecticide and such as he did, but the basics are all here, and he was such a wonderful teacher.

5.0 out of 5 stars A First-Rate Reference Book For Gardeners, April 7, 2003

This review is from: Crockett's Victory Garden (Hardcover)
I have been a gardener for over twenty years, and I have had opportunities to examine several books on the subject. Without question, Crockett's Victory Garden is the best book about gardening that I have ever read for two reasons.

First, James Crockett wrote with a passion for the subject. His book featured personal anecdotes about the challenges that both he and his co-workers faced at the beginning of the TV show; such as, the problem of converting an abandoned lot into the fertile garden that would become the focus of the show. He also shared his wisdom by responding to various questions from gardeners.

Second, the book was very well organized. Mr. Crockett took the reader through the experience of gardening in a concise, month-by-month basis instructing one on what to plant and when and how to do it. The book was written in layman's terms, making it both enjoyable and easy to read.

Sadly, James Crockett died several years ago, but his work will continue to influence gardeners both young and old for many years to come. I heartily recommend this book to everyone with a passion for gardening!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome format- but please don't use all those chemicals!, March 5, 2010
By
The best thing about this book is how it is organized. Each month begins with a checklist of what you have to plant, transplant, thin, and otherwise tend to. Then the chapter has sections where he gives instructions for each task.

I think it's great that so many of the contributors are concerned about the thoroughly UN-organic methods that Crockett used. I agree that the book is way too heavy on the pesticides and chemical fertilizer, but the rest of the advice is excellent. You can follow his methods and schedule easily, and substitute the chemicals with more organic methods.

I had this book, then it got wet and the glossy pages all stuck together. I missed it so much that I went out and bought it again. I read the book every year for the valuable, practical advice and the month-by-month format is absolutely perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is one of my most well-loved garden books., April 21, 2009
This book is laid out uniquely. Mr. Crockett gives a month-by-month write-up of what you should be doing in the garden or for the garden, for all 12 months of the year. There is a seed list, and a vegetable gardening guide for the different zones. This book really teaches you how to be a garden planner and keep one step ahead.
This book is the companion to the nationally acclaimed PBS television series.
My brother and my mother both liked it so well, they asked me to get them a copy too.
