This new book was published in March and has received widespread attention and acclaim. It's a selection of the Canadian Medical Association's Personal Health Series and written by an IBD gastroenterologist at the University of Toronto Medical School. In very clear language and using excellent diagrams, Dr. Saibil discusses IBD's signs and symptoms, diagnostic procedures and instruments, the role and effects of diet and nutrition, available drug options, pros and cons of surgery and possible complications, effects on sex and pregnancy, insurance and IBD, and other quality of life issues. One major plus is this book is up-to-date on the latest IBD research and treatments. Without question it's the best one volume guide to IBD available!

A very informative book. I have been a Crohn's patient for 15yrs (diagnosed at 13yrs old) and my sister has been a Crohn's patient for 20 yrs (diagnosed at 10 yrs old). Between the 2 of us, we've pretty much seen it all and this book has helped us explain things better to friends and our fiances about what we've gone through. They're making great strides, hang in there all and take it one day at a time!!

Required reading for anyone seeking information about Crohn's or Ulcerative Colitis.

Dr. Saibil addresses causes, symptoms, diagnosis, drugs, complications, surgery, diet, and other important aspects in very CLEAR, WELL THOUGHT OUT, COMFORTING and easy to read book.

This book gave me understanding and hope to help deal with a very unpleasant time in my life.

This book is a great resource for anyone who has UC or Crohn's (or anyone who knows/cares for someone with UC or Crohn's). This book offers validation for all of the many symptoms of the disease, many of which are not "normally" associated with an intestinal disorder. The chapter on surgery is by far best I have seen yet - it offers easy to understand diagrams to accompany the sometimes overwhelming verbal descriptions of the multiple surgeries available today.

The only negative thing I can think of, is that Saibil tends to give the "worst case scenario" (which I appreciated but could potentially scare someone with mild UC or Crohns, or someone who has not been taught about their disease by their doctor). This book is an excellent reinforcement of everything your Gastroenterologist SHOULD be telling you!

I have found this book very helpful! I was diagnosed with Ulcertive Colitis is September of 1997. I decided to get a second opinion in February of 1998, only to find that I have Crohn's Disease. After searching the web for answers about Crohn's, I found these book reviews and decided to read this book for myself. This book has answered many of my questions and helped me ask my doctor a lot of questions. I suggest to anyone that has just been diagnosed with this disease to read this book! It can be a very scary thing finding out about this disease, but by reading this book, it can help answer some, if not most of your questions.

Having Crohn's disease or UC means life can be an unwanted roller coaster of doctors, medications and tests. After almost 20 years of Crohn's disease, I've found it's important to have a reliable and comprehensive reference on the bookshelf.

Dr. Saibil's book is just that...it offers great sections on how to minimize disease effects on daily life, basic explanations (with lots of helpful pics) for family/friends, and drug and surgery info. As symptoms (unfortunately) may crop up and your treatments may change, it's important to have a book like this to refer back to.

I went to the store looking for a book that could explain what I am dealing with. I have IBD but they are not sure yet if it is UC or CD. I started reading this book and from the beginning I knew that it was different. It started by telling about your digestive system and how it is supposed to function, before telling you what IBD does to it. Every time this book mentioned a medical term, it would break it down with the definition. It was a very easy book to read and I found it to be very informative.

This book is easy to understand and provides excellent information about everything you would need to know about Crohn's disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Subjects range from sexual activity and child-bearing to the effects of diet and the pros and cons of surgery. There are many diagrams included in this book and a glossary of medical terms which makes this book comprehensible. Every subject is thoroughly explained and written in basic terms. This book is a great guide and I highly recommend it.

Dr.Saibil does a wonderful job writing to us--the general public. There are no huge scientific words. If unfamiliar words must be used, he is very careful to define them for the reader. For new sufferers, this is the starter reference for you!!
