Incantare,
By RootedHand (Ohio) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Crone's Book of Magical Words (Paperback)
"Sweeten the oven, sweeten the pot, sweeten the cold and sweeten the hot. Summon thy virtues into this place, to teach me patience and skill, and grace." This is just one of the many many quaint spells and enchantments found in The Crones Book of Words by Valerie Worth. First published in 1971, this book is one of my all time favorites. I hope you enjoy it's pages as much as I do.

I have all her books and her writing is pure magic. The kind of book that holds mystery and an eerie sense of the past within it's pages.
The little poems are brillant, they transport me to another place and a timelessness. I adore the artwork within as well, it adds to the book immensely. Worth was obviously intune with the ways of nature and the traditional witch...she was born with it in her soul....as some of us are. Don't miss this absolute sparkling gem of a book...a true treasure.

Beautifully written spells,
By J.D Meder (CT, SA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Crone's Book of Magical Words (Paperback)
If you practise witchcraft and have appreciation for poetic and well written spells which also perhaps contain historical value then you will enjoy this book. With some creativity, most of the spells can be easily incorporated into rituals for those who enjoy a more dramatic type of ritual. There are also spells which I have never found on websites or other wiccan books or books on witchcraft such as enchanting an apple and something to be said for protection when walking past a graveyard. The poetic nature really does convey a sense of it being something that was perhaps an old wives tale or something that the strange little old lady (with black cat) living in a cottage in a forest clearing would have used. This book is really just something to add to your list of spells and some of them you would most probably never use but they are so beautifully written that you will be able to enjoy just reading them. It is not your avaerage Wiccan spell book so if that is what you are looking for then its not for you.

Eva's Review,

This review is from: Crone's Book of Magical Words (Paperback)
This has got to be one of the best books I've come across that has every detail listed in plain black and white. Very understandable and helped me learn even more ways on Rituals and Celebrations. If you get any book, I recommend this one the most.

Simplisticly perfect,
This review is from: Crone's Book of Magical Words (Paperback)
This is a simple classic. A composition of charms and spells reminicent of the victorian era. One can visualize the gracefuly aged witch chanting one of these incantations over a client in need.

Lots of fun spells,
This review is from: Crone's Book of Magical Words (Paperback)
While you may not use many of the spells in this book, nevertheless they are charming and some can come in very handy, like this Moon Vow for the Loss of Weight:
"I make my vow to fast until This crescent Moon shines round and full; While she waxes, let me wane; I must lose that she may gain." Here's a chant for Halloween: "Let the pumpkin's Candle glare Into darkness Everywhere Burn all evil From the air!" And one chant to develop the Art of Cookery: "Sweeten the oven Sweeten the pot, Sweeten the cold and sweeten the hot - Summon thy virtues Into this place To teach me patience And skill and grace." The chants in this book may fall more in the category of folk magic rather than Wicca and they range from chants for beauty, to success, changing weather, for development of different magical abilities, and others.

A book of magickal poetry,
This review is from: Crone's Book of Magical Words (Paperback)
This book was first published in 1971, and the author died in 1994. Valerie Worth was a poet, with various interests, to include magic and gardening. I don't think this is actually meant as a "spell book", to be used literally, but actually as a book of poetry inspired by old-time enchantments.
That being said, it is a delightful little collection. However, if you are looking for a "book of spells" that you can use in your own spellcrafting, you would be better served with a more modern spellbook. If you are just looking for some inspiration--perhaps something to read to hearken back to witchcraft of old--this little book can set the tone.

I didn't care too much for this book. It does have some great pieces in it, but I guess it just has to fit your style of spells and such. There aren't any real explanations to the words or anything, so that makes it a little confusing. It isn't a book for a beginner either.

Completely impractical. This book is not what I thought. It calls for items that would be impossible to attain in my area, and it didn't give any indication in the description that you need bogus stuff, like the heart of a bird. Blah. Not for me.
