"Bruja Canibal" lays the band's biggest influence out for all to see, employing a sound highly reminiscent of the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows," complete with backwards guitars, phase-shifted vocals, and circular drum pattern.
Ojo.

"Tu Me Liberas" and "Fenomeno," on the other hand, fast-forward a few decades, mining the chorused guitar sounds and danceable beats of INXS. "Ya Te Quemaste" looks further afield, with its dissonant guitar solos and stop-start rhythms, sounding like a combination of Jane's Addiction and DISCIPLINE-era King Crimson. (In fact, Crimson's Adrian Belew produced this album.) With an eclectic sound that should appeal to a wide range of rock fans, CRONICAS DE UN LABERINTO is an intriguing, multi-faceted release.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Album, September 21, 2005

Jaguares have come up with their most musically varied album to date. Songs like "Ya Te Quemaste" and "Bruja Canibal" are dissonate rockers unlike anything the Mexico City-based group has produced. "Hay Amores Que Matan," with its jazzy trumpet and trombone arrangement, and the galloping "Y Si" move the band farther into uncharted territory. Other tunes such as "Tu Me Liberas" and "Me Evaporo" sound instantly familiar in an original sort of way. Besides exploring distinct musical turf, singer/songwriter Saul Hernandez has penned his most openly political songs ever. Like the best protest songs, "Esta Muy Claro" and "Todo Te Da Igual" deal with specific controversies -- government corruption and citizen apathy in Mexico -- while remaining universally relevant.

The criticism of this album escapes me. The band and its sound have evolved from Caifanes to the present. It would be unrealistic to think Saul would keep rehashing riffs from "El Silencio." Is this effort the group's best? I don't know. It's as good as "El Equilibrio" and "Cuando La Sangre Galopa" and better than the studio disc on "Bajo El Azul De Tu Misterio." (I'm not going to compare it to Caifanes, because, like others have said, it's a different animal). There isn't a bad song on "Cronicas" and it gets better with every listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hands down their best CD yet, January 14, 2006
This review is from: Cronicas De Un Laberinto (Audio CD)
This is by far the Best Jaguares Cd to date. The album rocks! I've been a little dissappointed with the last couple cd's but this one makes up for that. Some of my favorite tracks are Tu me liberas, Esta muy claro, Todo te da igual and Ahi aprendi. The whole disc is great from beginning to end. If you are a fan, or if you've never heard of this band check this one out. It's a keeper. The best CD of 2005!

5.0 out of 5 stars LISTEN TO THE WHOLE DISC, June 18, 2005
This review is from: Cronicas De Un Laberinto (Audio CD)
The best songs come towards the end!

"El Espejo," "Mejor Sera," "Y Si," "Ya te Quemaste," and "Alli Aprendi" are the best tunes on this one.

Jaguares are terrific musicians...the music is complex--dark, atmospheric, catchy, intense, melancholic. I consider them to be among the greatest rock outfits of all time.

While the firts song is a bit dull, it really picks up on song #2, "La Forma" and gets better and better as it moves along.

2.0 out of 5 stars Another Disappointment, June 1, 2005

The Jaguares have failed again. After I got their last album "El Primer Instinto" I thought their next one would be better. I was wrong. This is probably the weakest Jaguares album to date. No lie, it's boring and only has one track that stands out. The best song on it is "Hay Amores Que Matan" the first single from the album. Download this song and save your money. I don't hate the Jaguares, I'm just a frustrated fan. I know they can do better. Remember "Bajo El Azul.."?

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Album if you've followed Saul's career from the beginning., June 23, 2005
This review is from: Cronicas De Un Laberinto (Audio CD)
Cronicas de un Laberinto is a good album. It will never compare to any of the past works Saul created when Caifanes existed. I am a fan of Saul and all his projects, but I must admit that after Caifanes the magic died. Equilibrio is a GREAT album, but all the others are just good, including Cronicas.

In the beginning Cronicas is somewhat hard to digest, but after listening carefully it makes sense. I think of all the albums Jaguares have released Cronicas is the one that resembles Caifanes the most, the melodies and chorus, such as in Tu Me Liberas, La Forma and one of the best tracks Espejo; which reminds me very much of Miercoles de Ceniza.

Overall, I give it a 4, because there are some absurd songs like Bruja Canibal, what type of a title is that? Also, Saul's songwriting is the same. He never evolved and he keeps writing the same metaphors and worst yet, he repeats himself so much. He repeats the same words and phrases since Caifanes.

Cronicas de un Laberinto **** 4 stars

3.0 out of 5 stars Neither great nor awful, February 28, 2007
This review is from: Cronicas De Un Laberinto (Audio CD)
I have only a fleeting familiarity with Caifanes, who I'd checked out simply because A: I enjoy Rock en Espan~ol, and B: They'd been produced by Adrian Belew. When I saw that he was behind the boards again with Jagares (and I'm not going to jump into the Caifanes vs. Jaguares fray; it's apples to oranges), I thought I'd give it a try.

One caveat I'd make is that some parts of it sound as much like Adrian Belew solo work as they do like Jaguares; sometimes it's the guitar work (which is absolutely sick in places--and I mean that in the best way possible), sometimes the percussion, and sometimes a bit of both. For example, I've played "Bruja Canibal" for a few Belew fans, and they wondered what some guy was doing singing in Spanish on a Belew record.
The standout track, for me, was "Mejor Sera", which wouldn't have sounded out of place on Perfect Circle's "Mer de Noms." It's powerful all around. The disc as a whole is nicely varied; not to a point where it's a distraction, but enough so that the album--or at least its better tracks--don't wear thin on repeated listenings.

Then there's the rest of the album. Some of what's here is a bit slick and poppy ("Tu Me Liberas" comes to mind). And there are a couple of tracks here that, to my ears at least, are throwaways (like the ones that close the album). That, to me, is what makes this a merely "good" album as opposed to a great one. This isn't a waste of money, but you'll have to sit through a few clunkers to get to the good stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars I love Jaguares, June 25, 2005
This review is from: Cronicas De Un Laberinto (Audio CD)
I too am getting sick of comparing Jaguares to Caifanes. If you want Caifanes go break out your El Silencio cd. Like most groups, they've evolved and their sound has changed. I don't know how people expect Jaguares to have the same sound they did 15+ years ago. Then people would be complaining that their music all sounds the same. People will always have something to complain about and so is life. If you don't like it, don't buy it and if you already bought it then sell it. Hi, ebay.

I particularly liked this album. I love "Tu me Liberas" and "Me Evaporo." The cd is very melodic and very soothing but that's Saul's voice for you. This is just an album you can relax to for the most part. Saul's voice is amazing still even after everything he's been through. Another beautifully written cd. I'm a huge Jaguares fan and I can't wait to see them on tour 9/15!
