Product Description

Crooked Path is the stunning debut from Star Anna and the Laughing Dogs. At only 21, the alt-country songstress plays well beyond her years. She's even prompted homeboy Mark Pickerel to declare: I believe she'll be Ellensburg's most valuable export since Screaming Trees. (Screaming Trees, of course, being his former band.) Star - full name Star Anna Constantia Krogstie - began playing drums at age 11 as a way to bang out her ADHD energy. In high school, she played drums for the punk band, No Continuous Standing. But the summer she was 16, Star started teaching herself guitar and began writing songs. From that time on, she's been finding her voice, developing her sound, finding what suits her. It's a sound with longing, heartache and simple sincerity in the same vein as Lucinda Williams and Neko Case - and it can make grown men cry. Crooked Path Features an early incarnation of the band with Corey Dosch on lead guitar and Orville Johnson on lap steel and banjo, but the sound, songs and singular voice are pure Star Anna. The band's first single If Wishes Were Horses with it's video currently making the rounds on CMT's Pure Country. Also of note is the second track, Black Cat Blues, featuring the great Wayne Horvitz on the Hammond organ.

Review

A doe-eyed, haunting honky-tonk siren, Star Anna is a captivating singer-songwriter with a tough-girl exterior and raw emotions. In high school, she played drums for the punk band, No Continuous Standing, who were OK, for yelling, says Star's mom, Mona. But the summer she was 16, Star started teaching herself guitar and began writing songs. From that time on, she's been finding her voice, developing her sound, finding what suits her. It's a sound with longing, heartache and simple sincerity in the same vein as Lucinda Williams and Neko Case - and it can make grown men cry, says Mona. It's gut music, notes the supportive mom. In the summer 2006, Star was joined by longtime family friend Frank Johnson on bass, then drummer Travis Yost and Guitarist Corey Dosch. Together, they were Star Anna and the Laughing Dogs. However, Corey recently relocated to the East Coast. Luckily, longtime Ellensburg/Seattle guitar phenomenon Justin Davis has stepped in to fill out the Laughing Dogs pack. The band recently signed to the newly established Seattle indie label Malamute Records. And while Star is at least 10 years younger than her band mates, there's no intimidation factor. She considers them her music-making peers, and they feel the same way: That's half of it, of making an artistic project, is the chemistry, says Travis, 34, a Yakima native. Yeah, we've found a really good something, adds Star. --Kim Nowacki, On Magazine

A musical soul-mate for those late and lonely nights, a voice so intoxicating that it might just eliminate any real desire to find a true love. --Mark Pickerel (Screaming Trees)

All in all, this may be the best debut album of 2008. --Americana UK

5.0 out of 5 stars Star Anna: Ellensburg High Lonesome Heartbreak April 6, 2008
By Finario
Format:Audio CD
Star Anna's Crooked Path touched me much the same way that Lucinda William's Car Wheel on A Gravel Road did ten years ago. SA's small town roots in the colorless flatlands of Eastern Washigton ache in her songs of the conflicted pull of being between the things she longs for and the things she's seen. There seems to be far too much heartache in her voice for someone so young; her songs of longing for youthful flight and escape, "If Wishes Were Horses" thematicly conjures up Bruce Springsteen's Thunder Road, far removed from the dusty beach roads of the the Jersey Shore. In a voice that is cautious, weary yet hopeful, she informs us that "it takes a long long time...to get it right." She pays faithful homage to Tom Petty, lifting a familar riff, in "Space Beneath the Door"; not far removed from Lucinda William's "Changed The Locks" which Petty recorded in 90's. Like Lucinda's CWOAGR, Star Anna's debut album tells stories of longing and love's indifference. Seattle and the state of Washington have gifted Americana and Alt Counthry enthusiasts with a calvalcade of stuning female voices of impassioned singer songwriters; Neko Case, Jesse Sykes, Brandi Carlisle and now Star Anna. She's a keeper.

5.0 out of 5 stars You'll love it more and more! April 24, 2008
Format:Audio CD
I bought Star Anna's CD at her CD debut in Seattle. Of course I listened to it right away because I was blown away by her performance! I had seen her before and noticed how she is getting more and more powerful as a singer. And her songs! Incredible! The whole band is a remarkable mix!

However, aside from how much I love to listen to her music and we do, alot, in the car as we drive about town and such. But my granddaughter, Emma, who is 3 years old, will not let us listen to anything but Star Anna! She gets quite upset when we try to put anything on just for a change! She says "Horses to horses"! (That's what she calls the first song.) Seriously she sometimes screams at us, my daughter and me, until we put it on! Then she starts rocking her head and sings it! She has since learned the words to the other songs on the CD. And let me tell you the more I hear this CD, and I do lots thanks to Emma, the more I fall in love with it!

I have given copies to friends as gifts and once I got a ride from one of them and he had it on his car player! Ha! It's a gem!
