5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful Christmas album., October 21, 1999
By
This review is from: Croon & Swoon: Classic Christmas (Audio CD)
"Croon and Swoon" contains the classic Christmas songs you heard while growing up. Each song is just as you remember it. There are some truly beautiful songs on this album, such as Johnny Mathis' "Winter Wonderland," Judy Garland's "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas," and Peggy Lee's "The Christmas Waltz" (which listeners in the SE USA may remember was featured prominently in the Publix holiday commercials a few years ago). There is only one miss on this album: Ray Conniff's "Silver Bells," which conjures visions of elevator music. The album is thoroughly enjoyable and likely to become a favorite in your home.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Accidental Treasure, November 23, 2001
This review is from: Croon & Swoon: Classic Christmas (Audio CD)
I was at my local used music store, and was searching through the Christmas cd's and found this cd. It was marked used, but was still sealed, so I bought it. It is the best Christmas cd that I have bought in a long time. It has all the songs I remember listening to on the radio when I was a child on Christmas Eve waiting for Santa. It is a definite must have for putting up the Christmas tree or sitting in front of the fireplace drinking eggnog. It has that kind of warmth that makes you feel like a kid again. With songs from people like Bing Crosby, Gene Autry and Doris Day how can you go wrong? Get this cd and get the most out of your Christmas.

4.0 out of 5 stars Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, November 24, 2005

This review is from: Croon & Swoon: Classic Christmas (Audio CD)
It's amazes me to read people in this (and other reviews) lament Judy Garland's "version" of 'Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas." Her version is the definitive and original version from the classic film "Meet Me in St. Louis." The POINT of the song is sad and is about being separated from loved ones during the Christmas season. It is yes, about trying to "muddle through somehow." If that offends your sunny sensibilities, then you might not like this version. But sometimes Christmas is merry, sometimes not. Just like life. Other artists wanting to put a more positive spin on the song- changed the lyrics. I love her "version." I think it is poignant and moving. Great album overall.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Collection of Xmas Classics!, September 29, 2011
This review is from: Croon & Swoon: Classic Christmas (Audio CD)
Together with its similarly named successor ("Croon and Swoon: Classic Christmas 2," which is unfortunately out of print as of 2011), "Croon and Swoon: A Classic Christmas" gives you a fantastic collection of classic Christmas tunes.

Most of the best-known Christmas pop songs are on one disc or the other, sometimes in the best-known version and sometimes in a very well-performed alternative, and there are some beautiful traditional carols as well. Between the two discs, you get everyone from Bing to Mahalia Jackson, Julie Andrews to the Andrews Sisters, Burl Ives to Gene Autry, Lena Horne to Johnny Mathis, Doris Day to Rosemary Clooney to Ray Coniff, Andy Williams to Perry Como -- and many other major artists of the 1940s through 1960s.

If you're just starting a Christmas collection, or you want to supplement your existing collection with classics from the 40s, 50s, and 60s, you can't do better than the two "Croon and Swoon: Classic Christmas" CDs. Get used copies if necessary!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great except for Judy Garland's awful Have Yourself a Merry, December 19, 2004
This review is from: Croon & Swoon: Classic Christmas (Audio CD)
I really enjoy this album, except for Judy Garland's insufferable vibrato on the song Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas (did people back then really think that this sounded good?). Her "singing" is more of a warble. My next major objections are the different lyrics she sings from any version I have ever heard of this song, and I have heard many (instead of "from now on our troubles will be out of sight," she sings "next year all our troubles will be out of sight." Then, at the end, instead of "hang a shining star upon the highest bough," she sings "until then, we'll have to muddle through somehow." I am usually very much of an anti-revisionist, but if these are the original lyrics, now I now why everyone else has changed them. They are awful. (Sorry, I'm not interested in waiting until next year for my troubles to be out of sight, I want to start right now, and I'm certainly not interested in "muddling through somehow.") "A" for the concept of this album and the many great tracks. "D minus" for including this version of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, when there are so many other great ones they could have chosen from.
