Adelaide is a real crooning blackbird... a jazzy one too...,
By A Customer
This review is from: Crooning Blackbird (Audio CD)
Her voice is sweet and full of a jazz feeling, her phrasing crisp clear and smooth. She made Ellington's Creole Love Call a classic with her wordless scatting thoughout the song. Miss Adelaide Hill is on the same level as the legendary Ethel Waters, Annette Hanshaw and Conne Boswell. This cd is aperfect introduction to this jazz song stylist. Recommended to jazz vocal fans and jazz historians alike.

A voice as sweet as honey....,

A true jazz singer, of course these are her early recordings when her voice was as sweet as honey(Helen Forrest was heavily influenced by Miss Hall) and every track is something to be savored especially her scatting on the jazz vocal masterpiece "Chreole Love Call" This CD is highly recommended to jazz vocal collectors, and historians.

Adelaide is a joy to hear,

an underrated jazz singer from harlem(one of the first popular singers accepted by both blacks and whites during the 20's & 30's) who had a unique and clear way of phrasing, she was also a wonderful scat singer and had a way with a ballad. Her only cometitors of her fday were the legendary Ethel Waters and Annette Hanshaw, which she could hold her own against. Just buy the cd. you'll be gad ya did

EARTHY BLACKBIRD,

Adelaide Hall is not Ella! She predates Ella with a more earthy, jazzy, almost "animal" soul you must experience! A diamond before the facets are added. I actually came to Adelaide Hall indirectly from her appearance in 1940's THE THIEF OF BAGDAD, a classic in itself. She sings a haunting lullaby in the film that is unforgettable. On Crooning Blackbird, besides Creole Love Call, which by the way is the first known recording of a scat song, Minnie the Moocher is my favorite. The entire CD is great. Too bad Adelaide Hall has drifted into the forgotten jass singer bin. If you can find this CD, add it to your jazz collection. !The Thief of Bagdad (The Criterion Collection)

A strong bird,

Ok, Might as well say it, I bought this record at 5$ in a remainder sale... As a female singers lover, I couldn't resist getting acquainted with her: a good thing indeed! I believe now that she MUST be known if you want to understand all the quality of sounds there was in the 1930's. She was a Duke Ellington singer, a very special voice, and some of the tunes, with her real special way of humming them, will easily go on playing in your mind even after the record is finished! :)
By the way, don't miss this collection of CDs: they are truly treasures! |
