Less psych, more mic, December 18, 2008

This album showcases the musicianship of this great band, but I feel some of the energy has waned. And I realize rock bands need an "image", with The INC often taking that to ridiculous extremes, but the whole velvet "Swingin' 60's" look and psychedelic album cover seems a little forced.
I've seen The INC play several times, from basements to big stages, over the years and they give a good show and they're one of my favorite bands. But I just feel they've strayed a bit from their garage-punk stylings to some kind of contrived concept. It's kind of a distraction and this album is a little too "melodic" for my tastes.
I'd say 3.5 stars, though I'll round up since I do like The INC a lot ...Armed Love turned out to be worth the wait, but I don't think Cross of My Calling will get a lot of play time in my iPod.
