Updated Review 4/30/2013: I have quit using this pen after six months. The black top (above the silver cap) fell off and the top plastic sleeve is cracked to the point that it will break if I keep using it. Frankly, I'm very disappointed in the lack-of-quality of this Cross pen. I'd ask for a replacement if I felt mine is a lemon -- it isn't; the quality of the pen is poor. I could have gotten a dozen "cheap" Bic pens that don't look as nice but they will last until their non-refillable ink runs out.

Should you avoid this pen? Yes if you are a heavy user. Maybe not if you are a casual user. But I'm a "heavy" user. What I mean is that I use it constantly. I go through a refill every 3 weeks. So, I'm one of those old school types who uses his pen for a living (when I'm not on the computer). And this pen lives in my pants pocket when not in use. Not clipped on my pocket -- in my side pocket. Obviously this isn't the pen for me. It may work GREAT for you. My son has the same pen and he likes it a lot. He isn't a heavy user.

Just sharing the update!

This Cross Edge Capless Gel Ink Pen (AT0555-2) is nice but the ink is really poor.

==========================
Good news about the pen:
==========================
1) It is tough enough to survive life in my pants pocket. I don't mean clipped ON my pocket -- I mean tossed IN my pocket. Most pens break. This one doesn't.
2) It looks nice.

====================================
Now for the bad news about the pen:
====================================
The refill ink is junk. It skips badly. It's embarrassing.

As an editor, I've been through a LOT of pens, and I've never had one that writes as smoothly as this one--without any drips, glops, or smears. It's almost too good to be true. Plus, it looks fabulous! The barrel is wider than your average bic, but it feels fine to me (possibly because I have long-ish fingers), and it fits easily into the pen holder in my padfolio. Also, the capless style means it will never fall out. At this very reasonable price (compared to many other professional-quality pens) I will definitely be buying more just like this one to keep in my purse and on my desk at home.

Mechanism works well, gel refill provided gives a dark bold line. If your handwriting tends to be on the smal side, you will appreciate that this pen will also take the jumbo sized Cross ball point refill. Nice, inexpensive addition to any pen collection.

I and my husband are both business professionals. We are always writing things down. It seems like I am either writing notes about design changes to a website I am working on in my professional sphere or updating the grocery list stuck to fridge reminding me of the ever-growing list of items we need.

My husband writes so much that he keeps a pen attached to the front of shirt at all times. Whether he is wearing a T-shirt or work polo, he always has a pen. In fact, we have a running joke in the family that, if he isn't wearing a pen, he is naked. If he is wearing two, he is overdressed. Don't laugh! It's happened!

When BzzAgent.com offered me the chance to review a Cross pen, I jumped at the opportunity. Writing is such an integral part of our lives and we both value good writing instruments. I was ecstatic to receive the Cross Edge to review. In short, it is an executive level rollerball pen that opens with a slide action.

The Pros:

* The Gel ink is so fluid, one could almost get the sense that the pen is intelligent enough to intuit the writer's thoughts and write on its own. The tip effortlessly floats across the page.
* No cap to lose! It opens with a slide action rather than a twist or with a cap the way most pens do. You simply give it a small tug. It's so easy to open that it can even be done one-handed. I even find myself clicking it open and shut when I am lost in creative thought. It just begs to be played with.
* It's stylish. The pen's design is attractive and eye catching. Whether it's the punched out metal detailing on the clip or the high quality resin finish, I almost want to make sure my shoes are matching it when I carry it. It's attractive enough that it could easily be an executive accessory.

I really like this pen! Although the barrel is a little wider at the middle, the tapered shape of the pen sits comfortably in your pocket AND does not bottom-out in shirt pockets (ever have a nice pen that's constantly trying to puncture the bottom of your shirt pocket?). Of course, as far as I know, no Cross Pen has the shirt pocket issue thanks to the tip-to-clip length being short enough to fit correctly.

Speaking of the clip, it works really well! It's not that it's super-tight (it is pretty tight), but also due to the length and how it tucks into the barrel.

I would also recommend this pen to those who need a wider barrel due to physical hand/wrist issues. I like Dr. Grips, but, IMHO, they're TOO BIG and sit horribly in pockets.

One last note... this pen, like other SelectTip Cross pens, CAN be refilled with Fisher Space Pen Refills (See Customer Images) with a small hack to the Parker adapter. The trick is to stack the refill and the Parker adapter in such a way that the refill is NOT inserted into the adapter but, rather, is pushed against the end of the adapter instead. In other words, turn the Adapter around opposite of the way it is supposed to be inserted. Then, lay the refill + adapter next to the original Cross cartridge and place a small mark near the adapter's open-end so that, when clipped, they are the same length. You can then insert the adapter first (into the Pen) followed by the refill. The spring at the tip of the Cross pen keeps everything snug. Writes amazingly smooth and, with the Fisher Space Pen Refill, you'll be ready for your trip to Mars. ;)
