Book Description

June 1996
In place of radical secular environmentalism, this book offers an ecology that views man as created in the image of God, that takes sin seriously, and looks to Christ and the redemption available through him as the key to the true meaning of creation.

Editorial Reviews

Review

As more and more Christians become concerned about the state of the environment, many are beginning to see the mission to save the earth as the most important ministry of the church. The Cross And The Rain Forest, while recognizing that care for the environment is not a trivial pursuit, seeks to warn Christians about the pitfalls that can ensue from an unqualified embrace of environmental ideology. to this end, Robert Whelan, Joseph Kirwan, and Paul Haffner present a thorough critique of the origins and implications of the more radical strains of environmentalism and show that this ideology's attitude toward the nature of God, humans, and animals calls for a fundamental reordering of priorities that is essentially hostile to the Judeo-Christian tradition. They then offer an alternative Christian ecology that views man as created in the image of God, that takes sin seriously, and that looks to Christ as the key who reveals the true meaning of creation. -- Midwest Book Review

This review is from: The Cross and the Rainforest: A Critique of Radical Green Spirituality (Paperback)
I enjoyed this book because it combines science and religion. Too many environmental science books are secular and miss the point of taking care of the planet--we are God's stewards to manage his "property." This would make a nice supplemntary text in a religious college where God has not been kicked out. It wouldn't fly in a state school, but it gives a believing instructor some "flavoring" which could be worked into current environmental issues. Science needs to be taught objectively--given that God is above objectivity as the first and still sustaining cause.
