The Grand Prize - The Cross of Ramplet, the fabulous ancient Knights Templar religious icon, believed to hold a great secret and presumed lost forever while being hidden in plain sight…

The Cross of Ramplet – The Mystery of Throckmorton Manor is a mystery adventure novel set within the parameters of a treasure hunt filled with suspense and set around the infamous Throckmorton family against the romantic backdrop of Regency England. The novel features a truly diverse and intriguing cast of characters who are prepared to do anything in their quest to possess the Knights Templar fabled religious icon treasure –the Cross of Ramplet.

An historical novel set in Regency England around the sleepy village of Portsur, this page turning parody mystery adventure book hurtles along like a runaway freight train. It combines the elegance of a Regency England Jane Austin romance with the cunning treasure hunt mystery style of Agatha Christie and the broad comedic style of Mel Brooks -- equating to a serious parody of the more traditional mystery adventure novel. The mood swings from hysterically ridiculous, to soft romantic overtures, often becoming deadly serious while maintaining the suspense of a ‘who done it’ treasure hunt that keeps the reader guessing right until the final four chapter climax filled with glorious fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Romp and Mystery Adventure!, March 6, 2011
This review is from: The Cross of Ramplet - The Mystery of Throckmorton Manor (Kindle Edition)
What a wonderful book! I loved it and could hardly put it down. The Cross of Ramplet is everything the description says, a who-done-it, a parody and a suspense adventure quest for, of all things, a Knights Templar lost treasure. It is a real page turner. (or in Kindle terms, a page scroller!) And part of what makes it so entertaining is that it is funny WHILE being serious, a parody of the mystery genre with original twists of its own.

It has wonderful atmosphere. The style of the dialog stays true to the Regency English setting (which does remind me of Jane Austin), and that, plus the descriptions helps create the very believable historical atmosphere.

I found many of the characters very attractive for different reasons, Darla Throckmorton, for her grace and elegance, mixed with a touch of insanity and a slight penchant for murder. Sarina, her sister, is a wonderful vixen, using romance to tempt the men in her life into helping with her quest. Leticia Throckmorton, the matriarch of the family, is very funny, a lot like Sheridan's Mrs. Malaprop, and at first she seems positively ditzy. I was so surprised to discover there was more to her than that!

The plot of the story is an adventure quest by this bunch of lovable but backbiting and double-dealing characters. Nothing, not even their familial relationships, is what it seems! How they go on their individual quests -- and the tricks they use to throw each other off the scent -- is what makes for great fun and suspense. I could not figure out who was going to find the Cross at all.

Which leads to the four chapter climax! Yes, it takes four chapters to reveal the true secret of the Cross of Ramplet, and in these chapters, all my theories about it, and the characters were totally exploded. I never saw it coming. If you like to solve puzzles, this part of the book will really intrigue you. It is ingenious!

The best thing about the novel is that it is so entertaining. I felt as if I knew the characters, and it played out in my mind like a movie. I was totally immersed in the book because it caught me on so many levels, the humor, the intrigue, the suspense, the character interaction, the language... it was just plain FUN to read.

So, if you want a grand time with your Amazon Kindle, this is the book for you! You'll have a wonderful romp with the adventure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lot's of Fun!, March 7, 2011

This review is from: The Cross of Ramplet - The Mystery of Throckmorton Manor (Kindle Edition)
A friend recommended this book and I love it. What a ride!

This book is funny, suspenseful, loaded with intrigue and humor and kept me guessing page after page.

The story, as the description explains, is about how the members of a regency English family are searching for a lost treasure of the Knight's Templar. What makes the story so interesting (and funny and sometimes downright dangerous) is all the things the members of this family do to trip each other up in their treasure hunt! It's walloping good fun!

I found this novel very easy to read and the intricacies of the plot kept me guessing all through the book. Just when I thought I knew what someone was up to, there was a twist and I had to rethink everything!

I felt like I really got to know the characters, Darla, Sarina, Sebastian.. they all seemed very real and are sometimes funny, and sometimes scary. Darla has a wicked temper, Sebastian is noble, but not above a little larceny, and Leticia (the mother of Darla and Sebastian) is so confused -- and confusing at times -- she made me laugh out loud. The scariest part of the book is when the pirates appear and start kidnapping people. These pirates are real villains!

I think there is something for everyone in this marvelous book. I love puzzles and the book is loaded with them, especially at the end. It is amazing what those Knights Templar did to protect their treasure, the traps and other tricks they set. When the characters in the book solve these traps, I was just amazed.

The end of the book hints at a sequel. I sure hope the authors write one... I like the characters so much, I'd love to see them return in a new adventure.

This is a wonderful book (it would make a fabulous movie!) that anyone who loves a good mystery and lots of roguish daring-do will enjoy, and there are plenty of laughs along the way.
