I have tried a couple of the lower-priced SRAM chains, and I have experienced problems with shifting, cassette wear, etc. I have been using the 991 on a mountain bike and a touring bike for about 6 months, and I have not had these problems with either bike. I don't know whether the 990 is any good, but I avoided it after my earlier [...]. I also have found the Shimano HG-93 chain (XT level) reliable but like the powerlink system used by SRAM, which allows you to take the chain off for cleaning and put it back on without a new link pin or chain tool.

What you receive is the SRAM PC - 991 CrossStep chain with solid pins. The picture shows the one with hollow pins, but this is not the case. I didn't count off for this, because no where in the description does it say hollow pins. Glad to replace my chain on my road bike with this higher end chain. I have had plenty of great experience with all SRAM 9spd chains, i run the hollow pin one on my MTN bike.

I've noticed no performance difference between the two. In the future, I'll likely stick with the lower priced 991.
