5.0 out of 5 stars Very good, but not quite great. Good fun., June 7, 2000
This review is from: The Cross-Time Engineer (Paperback)
Book 1 of The Adventures of Conrad Stargard

Yet another displacement story, and the first of a moderately long series, 'The Cross-Time Engineer' is very plausible and is told first-person by the protagonist. Frankowski has done a very good job (IMHO) of depicting the attitudes and prejudices of an educated young man from the end of the XXth century. More, his work instilled in me a lot of respect for the Polish people, and a tiny yearning to learn Polish. Once you accept the basic premise of someone being cast back in time, your suspension of disbelief won't be disturbed by the hero pulling fantastical solutions out of his hat. He suffers discomfort (and comfort!) and gets confused and makes mistakes like everyone else. Each book in this series can stand on its own, though it becomes more and more difficult toward the end.

I'd give this a 'G' rating despite the frequent (but non-explicit) sexual references. They're treated tastefully enough for younger readers, I think, although the book wouldn't suffer if there were fewer of them. (MHO.)

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best series I've ever read., November 17, 1998

This review is from: The Cross-Time Engineer (Paperback)
A must read for anyone interested in science and/or history and who likes science fiction. I found this series as entertaining as Eddings, Anthony, Lackey, Jordan, McAffrey, Asimov, Brooks, and Card, just to name a few, so you know where I'm coming from. And that sexism part? Very amusing, actually. The type of woman who reads sci-fi, like myself, is not offended by such light hearted humor. Both of my brothers and myself could not put these books down! Incredible!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing; riveting; only book I've read 20 times (or more), October 16, 1997

This review is from: The Cross-Time Engineer (Paperback)
Woven among a fanciful tale, the main character accidentaly travels back in time. An engineer in the 21st century, falls madly in lust with a red-headed girl and gets suckered into buying hundreds of seed packets. From there, he gets attacked by a 13th century knight, works as a copyist and a bodyguard, beds cute young ladies, and teaches all the people that he encounters about the way the world works. Excellent is to weak a word to describe this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Time Travel, Timeline alteration, October 9, 1997
By
This review is from: The Cross-Time Engineer (Paperback)
This is the first book of an excellent series dealing with time travel and alternate time lines. The series deals with a 20th century engineer who ends up in medieval poland. Faced with the need to survive, he uses all his knowledge to modernize poland and it's people.

Frankowski is extremely sexist in his writings and the attitude towards women has to be taken lightly. That said, his ideas are incredible, and they are very well presented. His writing style is extremely easy to read. I simply could not put the books down.

Excellent. Highly recommended for any fan of alternate history. My wife, who hates SciFi, LOVED the books. Anyone interested in history, science, engineering or technology should love this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Scifi Book dealing with TimeTravel and HowTO, January 16, 1997

This review is from: The Cross-Time Engineer (Paperback)
One of the most intriging books I have read in a long time. Mixes the concepts of Time Travel with how would a 20th century engineer cope in the Dark ages. Mixes innovation with a sense of fun and excitement. A little too medevil in its views of women and their purpose. Overall very well written. A must for every avid SciFi fan.

This review is from: The Cross-Time Engineer (Paperback)
An interesting tale that combines history and science fiction. The concept of an engineer going back in time and applying all he knows is very entertaining ... espically to an engineer
