5.0 out of 5 stars Golden resource
I almost felt like I was cheating on the CLAD test. This handbook was a wonderful resource and the only one I used to pass the test .... the FIRST time!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not so Great
I am taking a college course focusing on ELL students. This book covers plenty but not much detail is given on many of the major parts to ELL. This book must not bring much good taste to the instructor since we are switching books halfway through the semester.

5.0 out of 5 stars Preparing to take the CLAD test., October 26, 2001

Chapters 1 & 2 seemed very dry but I'm not big on theory. The remaining chapters were much more interesting. I highly recommend reading it before taking the CLAD test.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything I needed for the CTEL, June 24, 2006

This text admirably addresses the CTEL exam. Pop for the third edition; it's worth it. And if it were up to me, this book's sections on immigration law, history, and diversity would be required reading for any educator.

This book is an great improvement from the second version. It provides readers with current information on teaching English learners. Whether you are purchasing this book for a course or to prepare for the CTEL examinations, you will find it useful. This is a fantastic reference book that should be kept on your classroom teacher book shelf.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Resource Book, February 24, 2006
I purchased this book for a college class and it was mostly review from other classes. However, I found the book easy to read and very informative. This single book covered about 4 or 5 other books from different courses. If you are a beginning teacher that wants to be able to teach to all of your students, than this book is a must. This great book covers SDAIE teaching and just other great concepts. If you have never taken a multilinguial course than this is money well spent. If you have had a number of those types of classes, than I would look for a book more catered to what you need. This is book is a great introductory book. Most students that I had in class kept the book as reference material and that says a lot because we use book money to live on until finicial aide comes in, LOL.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful, January 18, 2010

I needed to get my CLAD certification and decided to take the CTEL exam. I was really nervous because I had heard the test was difficult. I found this book online and it was really helpful. I also bought the flashcards on amazon. Between the flashcards and this book I felt like I really learned a lot. The flashcards were great, but the book really filled in the blanks and helped me fully understand the material. For the exam it is important that you have a good handle on the information. The test is a lot of application of the information. The book gave great examples and explained everything really well! My copy is full of post-its, notes, and underlining! This will really help you out if you are looking to pass the test!

4.0 out of 5 stars Helpful resource, October 10, 2007
I'm using the book in my class on Working with English Language Learners. It is an informative book for someone who has not experienced that in their classroom. I will say though that the author makes her opinions well known on the US government policies around immigration and it is not a conservative opinion. Her call to teachers for activism is a bit much for my taste.

The book is an excellent source to study for the CTEL exam in California. It includes examples which are required items on the test. The chapters are very organized.
