4.0 out of 5 stars Dot your i's and cross your genres, August 8, 2011
This review is from: Crossed Genres Year One (Paperback)
Small press Crossed Genres presents a sort of "Best Of" collection of short fiction from their online monthly magazine of the same name. 12 months, 12 stories, 12 different themes, all in a sci-fi/fantasy blend. In "Year One" themes range from Romance to Dystopian, Western to Crime, and more. The result of this mix is a diverse and delightful anthology of well-crafted and highly imaginative stories that blur boundaries between traditional genres.

Each reader is sure to have his/her own favorites, but stand-out stories for me included "The Time of Tales" by C. L. Rossman, about a vr'hunter who is reluctant to pay for his lodging at The Storyteller's inn with the requisite tale; "A Crazy Kind of Love" by Jeremy Zimmerman, which explores the idea of love between a human and a completely alien being; and "Condiment Wars" by Jill Afzelius, a humorous account of how Ketchup and Mustard must foil Jalapeno's evil plan after the diner has closed and the people have gone home.

Overall, this collection was entertaining and is definitely worth checking out. Recommended.
