5.0 out of 5 stars Crossfire, December 4, 2008
This review is from: Crossfire: A High Risk Novel (Mass Market Paperback)
A madman is shooting people in Somerset, North Carolina. FBI Special Agent Caitlin Cavanaugh is on the case. Ex- Navy SEAL- turned author -Quinn McKade has a special interest in the case. Not only did he share a hot steamy night with Cait many years ago, and he wants more, but he's a sniper too and he's got insight into the shooter's mind like few others have. Cait is reluctant to work with Quinn. She's still attracted to him, but she doesn't want to be. Quinn is working hard at breaking down the walls Cait has built around her. He's making more progress there than at finding the shooter. The madman has something big planned and if Cait and Quinn don't find him soon, they could very well be his next victims.

Crossfire is a suspenseful, action- packed, and has a great- tension filled romance. The anticipation of when Cait and Quinn would get together again was almost as good as when they did. Sexual tension so good you can cut it with a knife and a twisted madman on the loose make Crossfire a story I couldn't put down. Ms. Ross' attention to detail and a cast of interesting characters keep the pages turning fast. The bartender and the reporter have a great story to tell as well in Crossfire. Now that I've got a taste of Ms. Ross' sexy SEALs I want more. I can't wait for Shane's story!

I came across this author by chance in reading The Homecoming so was interested to see what else she had written especially since there was a tie or two in Homecoming with Caitlin. So I placed it on my Christmas list and received it. I had a struggle from the beginning to really get into it. It was confusing at first and found myself often having to go back and re-read several pages multiple times or had to put it down so I found myself taking almost 2 weeks to read it instead of 1 or 2 days.

I did like the characters, they did seem strong and definitely suited each other. Caitlin was someone you definitely want in your corner and Quinn sounded like a man you would definitely want to bring home to momma. The chemistry between them you could feel which was the best part of the book. It was the plot itself that was confusing at times. The mystery they had to solve was interesting and unique and the ending was definitely not what I suspected. I will go back and read the first one in the series to if that helps and makes the series more interesting.

Crossfire by JoAnn Ross is a fast and stimulating read. Even more interesting than the story itself are the insights into the mind of a military sniper that are sprinkled throughout the text. To catch a killer, Cait needs to know a lot of the things she can only learn from Quinn, the ex navy Seal sniper. She has to tread carefully because this hunk could give seriously dedicated nuns the night sweats and she knows his sights are set on her. Previous forays into romance have left her disillusioned and on the celibacy wagon and she is determined to stay there. Quinn is a very single minded male; he wants the serial killer gone so he can make headway with Cait. The killer has his own plans for Cait and the beautiful news reporter he's obsessed with. Throughout the story Quinn is dealing with things his way, while Cait continually hacks at a wall of distractions caused by the multiple agencies taking part in the investigation, annoying coworkers, funding problems and the need to incessantly protect her personal and occupational turf.

4.0 out of 5 stars sharp shooter (and writing), January 23, 2009
This review is from: Crossfire: A High Risk Novel (Mass Market Paperback)

This is the second novel for JoAnn Ross in the "high risk" series, and while the main story runs totally independently of the previous novel, there is enough cross over of characters and history that reading the first novel (which I thoroughly enjoyed) a must, or at least strongly recommended.

Quinn and Cait are the couple at the heart of this story, however I categorize this book as a suspense book with a side of romance. The couple in question have known each other for a number of years (though their interactions very few and far between there was an intimate night) prior to the start of this book, and I like the dynamics of this set up. I've enjoyed both of her leading men- she writes them as strong warriors with wounds and flaws, but not as cold/heartless/man-sluts that some authors make their leading (military) men out to be.

JoAnn writes from many characters perspectives- including the killer and some of the victims and shares their thoughts before a sudden death. It's haunting at times, disturbing, and gives a more realistic (less than sunny) view of life for veterans with PTSD. I didn't know 'whodunit' until the very end, and I enjoyed the whole roller coaster ride that was Crossfire.

If you're looking for a great military suspense (with side dish of romance) this is a great choice. I look forward to the next book in this High Risk series.

Another High Risk Novel and just as good as the other ones. She should write some books like this series. Keeps your interest all the way to the end. Like to see more like this series.

3.0 out of 5 stars SEALs and snipers, August 4, 2011
This review is from: Crossfire: A High Risk Novel (Mass Market Paperback)
This is the first JoAnn Ross book which I've read, although I have the next two in the `to be read' pile; there's one prior to this story, Freefall, which I haven't read. But that didn't matter as the story was easy to pick up and the (presumed) central characters of Freefall were a fairly minor part of this story, part of the "High Risk" series.

I enjoy reading books with military settings and with strong female leads and Cait Cavanaugh, an FBI Special Agent, could be seen as that. The male lead is a former Navy SEAL sniper, Quinn McKade, a surprisingly laid-back-seeming character who has become a writer since his retirement from the special forces and whose knowledge of sniper skills and tactics helps Cait when it appears a sniper has struck several times in the town of Somersett.

Cait and Quinn have some history - a one night stand many years ago - which makes their initial encounters awkward. However, as they investigate further killings they begin to understand one another more and might just salvage something from their past.

This story was always interesting to read, particularly the information about combat and snipers. However, I felt that Cait wasn't entirely successful as a sleuth. She didn't seem to actually solve the crime to me, just seemed to spend her time visiting different crime scenes, sparring with Quinn and not getting on with her FBI partner.

Quinn, too, as a civilian, seemed to have a remarkable amount of freedom to investigate along with Cait and seemed almost too good to be true. At least the book steered clear of the massively over patriotic gushing SEAL enthusiasm which one often comes across - yes, these are impressive chaps, but they are humans too. I did like some of the insight into some of the stresses that combatants faced back in real life.

I did enjoy reading this book because of the setting and some of the background information but didn't find the actual plot particularly gripping. However, it was good enough to make me want to pick up the next book in the series (Shattered), so it's worth a read if this is your kind of genre.
