5.0 out of 5 stars Crossing Alaska through Photographs, July 27, 2000
By
Leonard B. Feld (Jericho, New York USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Crossing Alaska (Hardcover)
Crossing Alaska is a "large size" book containing a combination of fantastic color photographs and information about America's last great wilderness adventure: Alaska.

The author, situated in Alaska, during the construction of the Alaska Pipeline, has captured the great beauty and size of Alaska in wonderful color photographs. You'll see the bears, caribou and the playful sea otters.

Her descriptions of the country and the breathtaking landscapes meld perfectly with the full page color photographs. This book is found in many of the hotels in Alaska and near the Denali National Forest as a "come on" to get you to go out and really see the back country; it is well worth it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Shill for the Oil Companies, October 4, 2007
This review is from: Crossing Alaska (Hardcover)
When this book was published, it was completely underwritten (and commissioned) by the North Slope oil industry as a way to "celebrate the 20th anniversary of the pipeline" with employees. All fine and well if you are transparent and put your corporate logo on and in the book. But, no, this book was masterminded behind the scenes so that the general public would never know that it was oil industry marketing propaganda.

Even when the author, hired by BIG OIL, approached members of Alaska's environmental community to get a "balanced view" of the oil industry, interviewees were not told what the true nature of the book was. Eventually, it leaked out, and the conservation community bowed out, refusing to have their words morphed into some slap-happy feel-good pretty photo book for BIG OIL. The pipeline has forever changed Alaska's environment. Far from a clean energy source, oil has wreaked havoc in the 49th state. This large-format coffee table book is a good paperweight, but that's all.
