Biography

With their ringing, bagpipe-like guitars and the anthemic songs of frontman Stuart Adamson, Scotland's Big Country emerged as one of the most distinctive and promising new rock bands of the early '80s, scoring a major hit with their debut album, The Crossing; though the group's critical and commercial fortunes dimmed in the years to follow, they nevertheless outlasted virtually all of their… Read more in Amazon's Big Country Store

4.0 out of 5 stars great songs, but at times I question the "remastered" label, October 30, 2001
By Claiborne (New Orleans, Louisiana USA) - See all my reviews
Big Country is a terrific band. They honestly don't sound like any other music maker I have encountered. This is a powerful debut album. Each song on "The Crossing" is a superior and heartfelt composition. However, despite this German-made import (red background with album title insignia) being labeled as "remastered," I must say that several songs have too much bass and not enough treble, especially on "In a Big Country." In this song, even with the bass and treble controls set at equal levels on my receiver, the guitars seems to be drowned in booming bass lines. BUT, overall, it is a satisfying purchase and it boasts four additional songs, which are pretty good too, and which I assume originally to have been B-sides.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Crossing, December 16, 2000
By "gkikkoman" (Makawao, Hawaii United States) - See all my reviews
I first listened to this album when I was about 5 years old- I'm 21 now, and these songs still sound as if they were recorded only a few hours ago! In my opinion, less than 1% of all artists are able to produce this kind of mastery. Big Country is one of the greatest bands of all time. These guys have found something that almost no one does!

5.0 out of 5 stars We'll Miss You Stuart !!!!, December 18, 2001
By Paul A. Fucito "fabfriday" (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Upon hearing the sad news of lead singer Stuart Adamson's death, I had to pop this CD in, and enjoy one of the best debut albums I've ever heard. In 1983 you couldn't turn on your radio without hearing "In A Big Country" with those trademark bagpipe-like guitar riffs and Stuart's soaring vocals (and what a music video too by the way...). In a time when synthesizers took center stage, Big Country rocked out with a unique take on pop music, and it worked. This album is solid from start to finish and so polished (thanks in part to the legendary Steve Lillywhite), you'd never think this was a debut album. Standout tracks include "In A Big Country," "Inwards," and "Fields of Fire." Big Country's entire catalog is worth looking into and I played much of it through the mid 90's while I was still in radio. You'll never confuse these guys with anybody else from the 1980's and "The Crossing" is a great addition to any collection. We'll miss you Stuart...
