Product Description

Blake's world consists of an aging McMansion on the island of Coral Heights. Formerly a luxurious golf-oriented "resort community" in sunny Florida, sea level rise and the breakdown of American society have turned the subdivision into a swampy, isolated isle where a former military general-turned-arms trader has taken control... and the horizon doesn't extend beyond the submerged Interstate's next exit. Blake spends his days clandestinely reading books, watching the boats come and go from the roof of the old Wal-Mart, helping his mentally ill mother farm their backyard garden, and dreaming of a world beyond Coral Heights. When Blake collides with a mysterious woman under pursuit, he makes a split-second decision to help reach to her sailboat and escape his island... and embarks upon the adventure of his life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best first novel I've read in a while., September 28, 2009

(REAL NAME)
Given how polished the writing is in this novel I was surprised that it is the first work by Ms. Buck. The characters are very realistic and it is easy to connect with their experiences. The story of post environmental collapse America is very believable. I really wish there was more by the author and hope that this situation will change soon.

4.0 out of 5 stars New frontiers in subtle sci-fi, February 10, 2009
Crossing the Blue

What purpose does science fiction writing serve but to grant a vision of possible futures, be they favorable or grim? The world in which we review books on amazon.com is only a generation away from the one in which plastic shopping bags are saved because fresh meat will always bleed out of leaf wrappings. From the ritual ingestion of expired medication in the Florida Archipelago to the experimental society of Left Hand where people seek to learn from the errors of history, the protagonists of Crossing the Blue reveal the contrast and commonality between our North America and theirs. We know to question the sustainability of ours. Is theirs the one that is truly grim?
