5.0 out of 5 stars The Crossing, January 29, 2011
This review is from: The Crossing: Conquering the Atlantic in the World's Toughest Rowing Race (Paperback)
This sounds like such a clichéd way to start a review but `The Crossing' truly was a book I couldn't put down, I started and finished this book in less than 24 hours. Following Ben Fogle and James Cracknell as they prepare for and then rowed across the Atlantic in the Woodvale race, this book is completely absorbing. Written by both Fogle and Cracknell this book alternates sections between the two and this only makes the reading easier as you want to read one more section after another and you get a balanced view of the experience from both sides. I thought a book about 49 days on the ocean would be boring, but it is anything but. The various obstacles they had to overcome, both mental and physical, are extraordinary and keep you engrossed and turning the pages. From their naïve lack of preparation, to the emotional highs and low, to the weather both good and bad, taking in dolphins and whales and a terrifying boat capsize, this book is full of bravery, grit and perseverance and you are left with a new found respect for both men. There are also three colour plate sections with plenty of photos (including one of Cracknell's blistered bottom!) and these illustrate the story that unfolds perfectly. This may be a warts and all story that shows all the arguments, Fogle's determination and the fiercely driven nature of Cracknell, but the enduring element after you've read this is one of respect and awe and you can't ask for much more from any book.

Former Olympic medalist in rowing Cracknell and television reporter Fogle give a gritty account of their journey in the Atlantic Rowing Race. Describes the many challenges they faced in preparing for and then during the journey. The boys often behave like narcissistic brats but did manage to make themselves appear human, even likeable at times. It was worth reading if you have any interest in ocean rowing. Good adventure story.
