5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book was so very good. I rate books based on whether I connect with the characters and I just loved Nick and Raina. He was not arrogant as you see so many male characters and she was smart, yet vunerable. They were genuine characters and you could feel their sincere love. The secondary characters only added to this story. There was enough mystery and intrigue...

This book was an okay read; Nick was likable but not completely fleshed out as a male protagonist. 2.0 out of 5 stars Simply Ok, April 16, 2010
This review is from: Crossing The Line (Indigo Love Spectrum) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book was an okay read; Nick was likable but not completely fleshed out as a male protagonist. He seemed to make stupid mistakes over and over and it got to the point that I began wondering if he was just not that bright. Was the death of his partner supposed to be the excuse? I don't know. Raina was simply irritating to me, she is described as smart and the daughter of a police chief but still makes decisions that had me looking at the book in puzzlement. A cold-blooded murderer is after you and you leave a credit trail? You get lost on the highway? C'mon?! If you can get past her personality you may enjoy the book.

I cannot get into Cop stories but I love Crossing the Line. Nick was sexy, stupid, and kind, Riana was smart, loving, and resourceful. It was a wonderful interracial love story that kept it real. The plot was smooth and kept you guessing. I loved it Kudos to Bernice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, April 5, 2010
This review is from: Crossing The Line (Indigo Love Spectrum) (Mass Market Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book. It was part mystery romance and had some comical parts. Both main characters were really strong and yet sensitive and vulnerable when it caused for it. Over 400 pages I felt I got my moneys worth Layton went into nice detail. The only issue that I had which is very minor is that I felt Raina did too much she was an artist could sing play baseball fish decorator fashion designer mentor at the church and so on but like I said not a big deal. I also didn't think it was logical that it would take this killer almost 6 hours until he finally attempted to kill her but other than that I still thought that it was very good.

1.0 out of 5 stars Tricked by the ratings, October 19, 2010
This review is from: Crossing The Line (Indigo Love Spectrum) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is such a terrible book I refused to finish it which is unusual as no matter how bad a book is I try my hardest to stick with it to the bitter end. The two main characters had zero chemistry or likeability and I could care less about their individual lives. The dialogue was laughable and choppy; the constant references to 'Uncle Max' which fooled a so-called cop into imagining the worst were pointless, a pre-schooler could have figured it out. In fact, a pre-schooler could have written a better story. Certainly one without a a heroine with more mood swings (plus a knee-swing that came out of nowhere and was uncalled for ) than a roomful of PMS'ing women. Or a hero with the brains of a hen. Though meant to be a good cop he made so many foolish decisions that could have cost both their lives. A stomach turning example of the silly plot: the beroine comes on to the cop, he turns her down because y'know, its kind of unprofessional plus inappropriate to sleep with the person you're supposed to protect, she turns into a vicious shrew as a result of this, delibrately putting their lives at risk and acting like a spoilt brat. I could totally see why Leon the loser (more like winner!) dumped her. Many writers try to portray their heroines as 'feisty' but this writer failed to understand that being feisty or strong does NOT equate to exhibiting violence, bitchiness or a 'scorned woman' attitude. Yet this woman was also supposed to be a caring mentor, ace tennis player, outstanding at everything including fishing, garment design, painting, singing, yada, yada you get the picture. The racial issues were addressed in a clumsy, over the top manner that was completely uneccessary to the story and the introduction of a 'brotha' harrassing the woman seemed tacked on and clearly designed to provoke the readers. I could go on and on, this story was just so annoying on so many levels.
I have read literally hundreds of books in my life and this is one of the few I barely restrained myself from flinging into the nearest dustbin.
What a disappointment especially as the reviews were generally good. I will not risk a headache by purchasing this authors books again.

Fast paced, suspenseful and the witty dialogue between the main characters and the secondary characters were great too!
Crossing the Line is a definite keeper for your bookshelf. Mrs. Layton is on point with the hindrances for interracial couples as well as the happiness that interracial couples may find.

Enjoy and the book cover is fantastic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Caught Up in the Suspense..., August 11, 2010
This review is from: Crossing The Line (Indigo Love Spectrum) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is the first book I've read by Mrs. Layton...and I actually ENJOYED it...the mystery/suspense and DANGER surrounding Nick and Raina throughout DEFINITELY keeps me on the edge of my seat...and oh, YES, Nick is a TOTAL jerk in the beginning...however, he grows on me as the story progresses...and Ms. Raina is UNBELIEVABLY a "jack-of-all-trades"...LOL...she is RIDICULOUSLY good at just about everything she does (yeah, right?!!)...several of the secondary characters get on my LAST NERVE throughout...but the budding relationship between Nick and Raina is TOUCHING once they FINALLY stop fighting their attraction...and I was CAUGHT UP in their HEATED and at times comical verbal sparring...at times I LOL, teared-up, sighed, cheered and even shouted a few yeah right throughout...but overall the suspense keeps me CAPTIVATED 'til the end...I'll be keeping an eye out for more of Mrs. Layton's work.

5.0 out of 5 stars 2nd Bernice Clayton Novel!, December 28, 2011
This review is from: Crossing The Line (Indigo Love Spectrum) (Mass Market Paperback)
Loved Raina who was not only beautiful but also smart! In addition, I appreciate the fact that the author addressed the complexities of interracial relationships without dwelling on it. Ultimately she showed us that no matter what the "challenge" a couple experiences the most important thing i that there is love! While i love a good romance I especially like the twists and turn of a good suspense and this novel was the best of both worlds!

This is my second BL novel and I plan to finish her most recent one over break :)
